Subframe with Steering Gear

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Ball Joint Puller (3287 A)

Torque Wrench (V.A.G 1332)

Removing

- Remove the battery and the battery tray.

- Disconnect the wire - 1 - from the E-box.





- Disconnect the ground (GND) wire - 2 -.





- Disconnect the connector - 3 -.

- Guide the wiring harness out of all the brackets on the longitudinal so it can be removed together with the steering gear.





- Remove foot well trim, to do so remove nuts - arrows -.





- Remove the bolt - 1 - and remove the universal joint - 2 - from the steering gear.





- Remove the front wheels.

- Remove lower noise insulation.

- Disconnect the connector for the service interval extension to the oil pan.

- Remove bracket for exhaust system from the subframe.

- Remove coupling rods from stabilizer.

- Remove nuts - arrows -.





- Loosen the tie rod nut, but do not remove yet.

To protect thread, screw nut on pin a few turns.

- Press off tie rod end from wheel bearing housing with ( 3287A) and then remove nut.





- Remove pendulum support from transmission, to do so remove bolts - 14 -.





- Secure the subframe with bracket. Refer to => [ Subframe and Brackets, Securing ] Procedures

- Place engine/transmission jack engine/transmission jack (VAG1383A) below subframe.





- Place a block of wood - 1 -, for example, between (VAG1383A) and the subframe.

- Loosen bolts - 4 and 5 - and lower subframe with brackets slightly. Observe electrical wires when doing this.





- Lower the (VAG1383A) and guide the steering gear wiring harness back.

- Secure the subframe on the (VAG1383A) with the accompanying strap.





Installing

Installation is in reverse sequence.

- Install the noise insulation.

Tightening Specifications





Tightening specification, pendulum support to the transmission

CAUTION!
From MY 2008, Heli-Coil inserts are installed in the threads for the pendulum support threaded connection in the 02Q manual transmissions.

On these and all other transmissions, use strength class 10.9 bolts.

If, in the 02Q manual transmissions, there is not Heli-Coil insert, then use 8.8 strength class bolts and the appropriate tightening specification.
