Instruments - Battery Discharges After 5 Days Inactivity
27 08 01January 8, 2008
2016667
Supercedes T.B. Group 27 number 07-13 dated November 8, 2007 due to additional excessive current draw diagnostics.
Affected Vehicles
Condition
Battery, Discharged after 5 Days of Vehicle Inactivity or Storage
Technical Background
Instrument cluster causes alternator supply to stay ON consuming battery voltage and leaving battery discharged.
This may be caused by trunk warning light input to the Instrument Cluster.
Vehicles built AFTER 1C_8M000032 and 1Y_8M000028 will need a diode harness Part No. 1Y0 970 082 installed.
Production Solution
Diode implemented in Dash Harness from production 1C_8M507125 and 1Y_8M406644.
Service
Test Vehicle for Excessive Currant Draw
^ Using 5051A, attach 50a current clamp.
^ Open all doors, hoods and hatches, manually close latches.
^ Lock vehicle with remote key and wait approximately 15 minutes for Can Bus to enter sleep mode.
^ Calibrate and attach the 50a clamp to the B+ battery cable with arrow pointing towards battery fuse panel.
Note:
The static current draw will fluctuate between 225 mA to 325 mA during testing.
Vehicle's exhibiting more or less then 225 mA to 325 mA static current draw, further diagnosis is required.
Note:
Install diode harness kit Part No. 1Y0 970 082 on all vehicles within the specified VIN ranges. A parasitic draw DOES NOT need to be present.
Installation of Diode Harness kit
^ Remove instrument cluster, see Repair Group 90 in ElsaWeb.
^ Note the following wiring harness end connectors:
(1) Blue Connector 32 pins
(2) Green Connector 32 pins
^ Remove lock of Blue 32-pin wiring harness end connector.
^ Strip tape back away from connector approximately 4 in.
^ Identify pin 16 (brown and black wire) in the Blue 32-pin wiring harness end connector.
^ Cut out a section of the brown/black wire from harness, approximately 2-1/2 inches between points A and B.
^ Strip 5 mm off remaining wire ends at cavity 16 of the cluster harness connector and at dash harness connector.
Note:
IDENTIFY polarity of DIODE harness.
The solid brown wire of the diode harness must be attached to wire at pin 16 of Blue 32-pin connector at point "A".
^ Attach remaining brown and black wire of DIODE harness to remaining brown and black wire in dash harness at point "B".
^ Use heat gun from VAS-1978 kit to shrink splice insulation.
^ Loop excess wire for Diode flat to dash harness and re-apply electrical tape.
^ Reinstall Blue wiring harness end connector lock.
^ Apply tie strap to cable and connector lock.
^ Reinstall instrument cluster, see Repair Group 90 in ElsaWeb.
^ Operate trunk release on door panel to verify trunk warning light.
