Catalytic Converter: Service and Repair






Catalytic Converter with Front Exhaust Pipe

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Torque wrench (5-50 Nm) (VAG 1331)

Removing

- Remove the engine cover/upper air filter housing. Refer to => [ Engine Cover/Upper Air Filter Housing ] Engine Cover/Upper Air Filter Housing.

- Disconnect the Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) electrical connector - arrow - and free up the wire.





- Remove the nuts - arrows - of the front exhaust pipe/turbocharger.





- Remove right underbody trim retainer - arrows - and trim.





- Unclip the wire - arrow -, remove the connector from the bracket - 1 - and disconnect the connector - 2 - for the Oxygen Sensor (O2S) behind Three Way Catalytic Converter (TWC).





The flex joints in the front exhaust pipe must not be bent more than 10 degrees, otherwise they may be damaged.

- Loosen the exhaust system clamp - arrows -.





- Remove the exhaust system suspended mount bolts - arrows -.





- Remove the front crossmember nuts - arrows - and crossmember.





- Remove the catalytic converter with front exhaust pipe.

Installing

Installation is performed in reverse order. When doing this note the following:

Lubricate the turbocharger stud bolts with hot bolt paste (G 052 112 A3).

Replace gaskets and self locking nuts.

Install the exhaust system free of stress. Refer to => [ Exhaust System, Installing ] Exhaust System, Installing.
