Oil Pump with Balance Shaft Drive
Oil Pump with Balance Shaft Drive
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Connecting pin (T10027)
• Flat scraper
• Silicone sealant (D 176 404 A2)
Removing
- Remove the oil pan. Refer to => [ Oil Pan ] Oil Pan.
- Remove the chain guard. Disengage the locking lugs through the openings - arrows - if necessary using a small screwdriver.
- Remove the oil pump chain sprocket bolt. The center bolt of the vibration damper can be counter held.
CAUTION!
The chain sprocket driving the balance shafts must not be loosened!
- Release the tension on the tensioning rail using a screwdriver in the - direction of the arrow - and secure it using an 3 mm hex wrench - 1 -, across the flats.
- Remove the oil pump chain sprocket and remove the chain from the balance shaft drive.
- Loosen the oil pump with balance shaft bolts working from the outside toward inside and remove it. Oil pump with balance shaft assembly overview. Refer to => [ Oil Pump with Balance Shaft Drive Assembly Overview ] Oil Pump with Balance Shaft Drive Assembly Overview.
- Remove the intermediate plate.
Installing and Adjusting
• Preload the chain tensioner.
• Note the expiration date of the sealing compound.
• Differential shaft gear with intermediate plate and oil pan must be installed and tightened immediately after application of silicon sealant.
- Remove the sealant residue from the cylinder block with a flat scraper.
- Cut the tube nozzle at the front marking (nozzle diameter approximately 3 mm).
- Apply the silicon sealant to a clean sealing surfaces of the new intermediate plate as shown.
Note the following points:
• The sealant bead must be 2 to 3 mm thick.
• Sealant bead must continue to the inner side of the bolt holes - arrows -.
• Sealant bead must be on the cylinder block. No sealant is necessary on the oil pan.
• Sealant bead must not be thicker than specified. Otherwise, excess sealant could get into the oil pan and clog the strainer in the intake side of the oil pump.
- Place the intermediate plate as shown onto the alignment pins - arrows - of balance shaft drive.
- Install the oil pump with balance shaft gear and intermediate plate. Tighten the bolts - arrows - from the inside toward the outside.
• Tightening specification: 15 Nm + 90° (1/4) additional turn
• Note the different length of bolts, refer to => [ Balance Shaft Gear Bolt Allocation ].
- Turn the crankshaft to set cylinder 1 at Top Dead Center (TDC).
- Set the mark on the balance shaft chain sprocket - arrow - opposite alignment bore. Secure the chain sprocket in this position using the (T10027). Place the chain onto the balance shaft chain sprocket.
- Install the oil pump chain sprocket and tighten the bolt by hand.
• The oil pump chain sprocket fits only in one position. To install, only the oil pump must be turned.
- Remove the (T10027) and 3 mm hex wrench - 1 -. Tighten the oil pump chain sprocket bolt.
• Tightening specification: 20 Nm + 90° (1/4) additional turn
- Center bolt of the vibration damper can be counter held.

The rest of the assembly is basically a reverse of the removal sequence.
- Install the oil pan. Refer to => [ Oil Pan ] Oil Pan.
Chain Tensioner Pre-Tensioning
- Preload the piston - arrow - by hand.
- Push the tensioning rail in the - direction of the arrow - and secure it with a 3 mm hex wrench - 1 - across flats.
