Transmission and Engine, Separating and Assembling

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Shackle (10 - 222A/12)

Shop Crane (VAS 6100)

Vehicles with an automatic transmission: Insert Tool 18 mm (T10179)

Vehicles with an automatic transmission: Socket SW15 (V/175)

Vehicles with an automatic transmission: Multipoint Socket (T10035)

Separate the Transmission from the Engine:

Requirement

Engine/transmission assembly removed and mounted to the (T10359).

- Remove the starter.

Vehicles with a Automatic Transmission and Direct Shift Gearbox

- If present, disconnect the coolant hoses from the transmission oil cooler and seal off the openings.

Vehicles with All Wheel Drive (AWD)

- Remove the bevel box.

Continuation for All

- Disconnect and free up all electrical connections from the transmission to the engine.

- Secure the transmission using (10 - 222 A /12) and the shop crane, but do not lift it.





- Remove the upper bolts connecting the engine and transmission.

Vehicles with a Manual Transmission and Direct Shift Gearbox

- Before removing the last bolts, support the transmission with the shop crane.

- Remove the lower bolts connecting the engine and transmission.

- Separate the transmission from the engine; when doing this, guide the transmission.

Vehicles with a Automatic Transmission

Install the bolts using (T10179). When tightening, observe the tightening specification.

The (T10035) makes the assembling easier.

- For safety, first install a bolt which is easily accessible.

- Begin with both the lower bolts.

The hole for removing the torque converter nuts is located on the back side of the engine and is covered with a rubber cap.

- Remove this cap.

- Remove the six torque converter nuts - arrow - using (V/175).





Carefully rotate the engine further!

When installing, be especially mindful of the engine while guiding the transmission to the engine. The starter ring gear can be held steady from the outside using a screwdriver. When installing, the stud bolts are located in the holes on the drive plate.

- Before removing the last bolt, support the transmission with the shop crane.

- Now remove the last bolt.

- Separate the transmission from the engine; when doing this, guide the transmission.

Pay attention to the torque converter. It must be removed together with the transmission.

- During transport, secure the converter - arrow - from falling out, for example, with a wire - A -.





Assembling

Assembly is performed in reverse order of removal; pay attention to the tightening specifications in each repair information under Transmission, Installing.
