Clockspring Assembly / Spiral Cable: Service and Repair






Airbag

CAUTION!
Advanced airbags of passenger side in New Beetle sedan or convertible which only partially deployed, can cause severe injuries when second stage suddenly deploys.

When working with airbag systems and transporting airbag units that have not deployed or have not completely deployed, strictly follow safety precautions.

Never dispose of advanced passenger side airbag units of New Beetle sedan or convertible in waste or together with other materials to be scrapped.

Return Spring with Slip Ring

- Remove the driver airbag unit. Refer to => [ Driver Airbag Unit Assembly Overview ] Driver Airbag Unit Assembly Overview.

- Remove the steering wheel. Refer to => [ Steering Wheel ]. Steering Wheel

- Remove the two bolts - arrows -.





- Remove the upper trim for steering column switch - 1 -.

- Remove three bolts - arrows -.





- Loosen steering wheel height adjuster - 2 -.

- Remove lower trim - 3 - for the steering column switch.

For easier removal of lower trim, remove height adjustment handle (two bolts).

Models without ESP

- Remove harness connector - 1 -





- Release the catches - arrows - and pull the return spring with the slip ring from the steering column switch.

Wheels must be in straight-ahead position when removing or installing return spring with slip ring.

A new return spring with slip ring is secured in the center position with a cable tie.

Vehicles with ESP

- The steering angle sensor (G85) is installed in vehicles with ESP in housing - 1 - of the return spring with slip ring.





- Disconnect harness connectors - 1 - and - 2 -.





- Release the catches - arrows - and pull the return spring with the steering angle sensor from the steering column switch.





The return spring with the steering angle sensor must be in the center position (wheels in the straight-ahead position) for removal and installation.

A new return ring is secured in the centered position with a transport protection.

Continuation for all vehicles

Further installation is performed in the reverse order of removal.

For vehicles with ESP, also note the following:

- Install return spring with Steering Angle Sensor (G85) and engage. For a new component, remove transport protection.

A yellow dot must be visible in the hole - arrow 1 -.





The markings - arrows - must align.

- After installation is complete, the standard setting (basic setting) for the steering angle sensor (G85) must be performed.
