Crimping Pliers

Wiring Harnesses and Connectors, Repairing

Safety Precautions

CAUTION!
When performing repairs on airbag and seat belt tensioner wiring harness, use only terminals, connectors and wires designated for it.

CAUTION!
Be sure to read the information regarding repairing the wiring harnesses for the airbag and pretensioner.

Observe country-specific regulations.

Pay attention to decals designating high voltage components. When performing repairs, residual voltage must be discharged.

The wiring harnesses for the airbag and the pretensioner may be repaired only with the (VAS 1978 B). Refer to => [ Airbag and Belt Tensioner Wires, Repairing ]. Airbag and Belt Tensioner Wires, Repairing

Refer to User's instructions of (VAS 1978 B)

Crimping Pliers

On wire cross-sections and contacts up to 0.35 mm 2 it is very important to use the (VAS 1978/9A). As current in small cross-section cables is in the micro/milliamp range, any shortcomings in conductor or terminal contact integrity will result in electrical system or component malfunctions. Use of (VAS 1978/9A) ensures correct conductor to terminal conductivity, as well as terminal seal function. Most commonly used applications of these terminals are:

Oxygen sensor

Speed (RPM) sensor

Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor

The (VAS 1978/9A) are to be used when working on sealed contacts. In addition, cables of 0.35 mm2 can effectively be stripped to the correct length in preparation of termination.

Tool Head Mounting

- Pull both pins in direction of -arrow-.

- Insert tool head in direction of - arrow -.

- Press both pins in direction of - arrow -.

Stripping

- Install the seal on the wire and guide the wire into the ( VAS 1978/9A).

- Close the (VAS 1978/9A) and remove the wire.

- Slide terminal seal up to end of insulation, ensuring proper seal with insulation.

Crimping

- Insert terminal in positioner.

- Position the wire with the seal so that it is on the upper wire stop and close the (VAS 1978/9A).

- Remove the contact by opening the (VAS 1978/9A) after crimping.

Example of correct crimp - arrow -. The back side of the (VAS 1978/9A) is embossed with a recognizable pattern. As such, terminal repairs that are done using the proper tool and method can be identified.
