Vehicle Information
Condition
Instrument Cluster, Lights Flicker Intermittently
Instrument cluster lights flicker intermittently when operating wipers.
NOTE:
This condition as described does not compromise wiper operation.
Technical Background
The instrument cluster encounters interference with KL 15 and KL 30 caused by the windshield wiper relay; the interference causes instrument cluster to deactivate the display, lights and needles temporarily.
Production Solution
1. Separate the shared ground circuit of the windshield wiper relay and instrument cluster.
2. Install a new wire to ground for wiper relay on left side of lower A-pillar.
This solution implemented by supplier beginning with:
VIN: 1C_8M512018
VIN: 1Y_8M409981
Service
^ Remove lower left A-pillar trim panel, see Repair Group 70, Interior Trim in ElsaWeb.
^ Locate wiper relay panel above fuel and brake pedals on central micro relay panel.
^ Lower relay panel and identify relay 377.
^ Disassemble wiring harness connector for relay 377, -J31- wiper/washer intermittent relay (remove 4 safety retainers from the connector and extract BROWN wire (arrow) from cavity T18a/17 J31 wiper/washer intermittent relay) (diagram 07 nb 46/21 current track 268).
^ Once wire is removed from harness connector, fold wire back onto the wiring harness and tape (textile tape). This wire will no longer be used.
^ Access wire harness Part No. 1Y0 970 000.
^ Connect Terminal A into cavity T18a/17 of the J31 wiper/washer intermittent relay harness connector and assemble harness connector in reverse order of disassembly.
^ Route new wire harness Part No. 1Y0 970 000 along existing wiring harness toward left lower A-pillar and tape into place (textile tape).
^ Connect Terminal B to ground stud 44 figure (G and H) and tighten to 9 Nm +/- 1 Nm (80 in lbs +/- 9 in. lbs.).
^ Reassemble interior in the reverse order of removal.
