Instrument Panel

CAUTION!
Disconnect the battery ground cable prior to working on the electrical system and observe all safety measures.

Removal

If necessary, obtain the anti-theft code of the radio before disconnecting the battery.

- Remove the driver airbag unit.

- Remove the steering wheel.

- Remove the two bolts - arrows -.





- Remove the upper trim for steering column switch - 1 -.

- Remove three bolts - arrows -.





- Loosen steering wheel height adjuster - 2 -.

- Remove lower trim - 3 - for the steering column switch.

For easier removal of lower trim, remove height adjustment handle (two bolts).

- Remove hex socket head screw - 1 -.





- Disconnect the connectors - arrows - from the steering column switches.

- Remove the steering column switch.

- Remove bolts - 1 -.





- Remove cover - 2 - in the driver footwell from brackets - 3 -.

- Disconnect the rear side of cover - 1 - from instrument panel - 3 - and remove from the instrument panel in a backward direction.





- Remove bolts - 2 -.

- Push center plenum chamber cover - 1 - in a forward direction out of the locking mechanism and remove from the instrument panel - -.





- Slide the (T10057) into the release slots until they engage.





- Use the grip rings of the special tool to remove the radio from the instrument panel and disconnect the electrical connections.

The (T10057 ) must not be pushed to the side or tilted during the procedure.

To remove release tool from radio, press locking lugs on side of radio.

- Remove bracket - 1 - of flower vase - 1 - from the instrument panel.





- Disconnect the emergency flasher switch connection.

- Disconnect the front passenger airbag -disabled- indicator lamp (K145) from 05/03.

- Unscrew bolts - 3 - and remove center air outlet - 4 - from the instrument panel.

- Pry off caps - 1 - and remove screws - 2 -.





- Remove switch mount - 3 - from the bracket.

- Disconnect the electrical connections from the switches.

If present

- Pry auxiliary input jack - 1 - off of bracket - 2 -.





- If necessary, remove bracket - 2 - from switch mount - 3 -.

- Unscrew the bolts - arrows - (quantity: 6) (the bolts in the center of the vehicle are covered by the caps).





- Remove glove compartment - 1 -.

- Disconnect the glove compartment lighting connections.

- Disconnect the rear side of cover - 1 - from the instrument panel.





- Remove bolts - 2 - and two bolts - 3 - from the fuse carrier.

- Turn rotating handle - 1 - of the light switch to position 0.





- Push in the rotating handle - arrow A - and then turn it to the right - arrow B -.

- Pull the switch out of the instrument panel - arrow C - and disconnect the harness connectors.

- Disconnect headlamp range control switch - 2 - and disconnect the connector.

- Remove 4 screws - 1 -.





- Disconnect upper trim - 2 - and remove it from the instrument panel.

- Remove bolts - 2 -.





- Remove baffle plate - 1 - (convertible).

- Remove air duct - 1 - via the center of the instrument panel.





- Remove three bolts - 1 -.





- Lift left plenum chamber cover - 1 - in the instrument panel - arrow A -. This loosens the instrument panel (front edge and rear edge are clamped).





- Pull cover - 1 - toward the center of the instrument panel and out of the bracket under the A-pillar - arrow B -.

- Lift right plenum chamber cover - 1 - in the center of the instrument panel - arrow A -. This loosens the instrument panel (front edge and rear edge are clamped).





- Pull cover - 1 - toward the center of the instrument panel and out of the bracket under the A-pillar - arrow B -.

- Disconnect trim - 1 -.





- Remove bolts - 2 -.

- Remove instrument panel insert - 3 -.

- Disconnect the multi-pin harness connectors from the rear side of the instrument panel insert.

Vehicles without a cell phone mount

- Remove covers - 1 -.





- Unscrew bolts - 2 - (tightening torque 8 Nm) and remove handle - 3 - from the instrument panel.

Vehicles with a cell phone mount





- Remove bolts - 3 - and - 4 - from the cell phone mount.

- Remove cell phone mount - 5 -.

- Remove covers - 2 -.

- Remove bolts - 1 - and remove left retaining plate - 6 -. Remove grab handle - 7 - from the instrument panel.

Procedure for all vehicles

- Remove the 4 screws - 1 -.





- Press heater and ventilation controls - 2 - with attached cables under the instrument panel.

- Unscrew the 2 bolts and remove instrument panel housing - 3 -.





- Remove trim - 6 -

- Unscrew the bolts on the underside (quantity: 2), on the top side (quantity: 4), and on the left side (quantity: 1) of left upper instrument panel trim - 2 -. Remove the upper part of instrument panel - 2 - from base plate - 5 -.

- Unscrew the bolts on the underside (quantity: 4), on the top side (quantity: 4), and on the right side (quantity: 1) of right upper instrument panel trim - 4 -. Remove the upper part of instrument panel - 4 - from base plate - 5 -.

- Unscrew bolts - 5 -, bolt M8 - 6 - and 6 and remove frame - 7 -.





- Remove bolts - 3 -, - 4 -, and - 8 -.

- Unscrew the bolts for the fuse carrier on the instrument panel.

- Remove instrument panel base plate - 1 - from crossmember - 2 - and remove from the vehicle.

Installation

Further installation is performed in the reverse order of removal.

After connecting the battery, the vehicle options (radio, clock, electric window regulator) must be checked according to the repair information and/or user manual.

If the DTC memory was erased or the Motronic engine control module (J220) was disconnected from the battery, the readiness code must be generated again.

After installation is complete, the basic setting for the steering angle sensor (G85) must be performed for vehicles with ESP.

If the airbag indicator lamp (K75) indicates a malfunction after completion of installation, erase the DTC memory and query it again with (V.A.G 1551).
