Drive pinion, removing and installing, 01M, 4 Spd. A/T

^ VW 402 Thrust plate
^ VW 408 A Press tool
^ VW 432 Press piece
^ VW 447 i Thrust plate
^ VW 454 Press piece

Special tools and equipment required:

^ VW 510 Press piece
^ VW 516 Tube
^ 30-204 Installing ring
^ 30-555 Thrust piece
^ 32-109 Tube
^ 40-203/1 Tube, split

Special tools and equipment required:

^ 3155 Ring nut spanner
^ 3183 A Castellated box spanner
^ 3274 Adapter
^ V.A.G 1582 Tapered roller bearing puller
^ V.A.G 1582/4 Grip

Not illustrated:
^ Kukko 20-10 Puller
^ V/1 72 Removal hook

Note: To remove the drive pinion the selector shaft must be removed after taking out the parking lock disassembling and assembling parking lock.





1 - Drive pinion
^ Number of teeth
^ Removing go to Fig. 8

2 - Transmission housing
3 - Screw
^ 12 Nm
^ Remove screw before removing or installing bearing supporting ring (item -13-).
^ Insert with sealing agent AKD 456 000 01

4 - Hex nut
^ 250 Nm
^ Engage parking lock to remove or install
^ Secure with drift

5 - Output gear
^ Number of teeth
^ Pulling off go to Fig. 1
^ If signs of damage exist, always replace input gear and output gear together

6 - Tapered roller bearing inner race
^ Pulling off go to Fig. 2
^ Pressing on go to Fig. 3

7 - Tapered roller bearing outer race
^ Drive out with drift
^ Pressing in go to Fig. 4

8 - ATF oil deflector
^ Install together with bearing cap (item -10-)

9 - Bolt, 25 Nm
^ 25 Nm

10 - Bearing cap
11 - Shim
^ Determining thickness, Adjusting drive pinion

12 - Parking lock gear
^ Rounded side faces teeth of drive pinion

13 - Bearing supporting ring
^ 200 Nm
^ Remove screw (item -3-) before removing or installing bearing supporting ring.
^ Removing or installing go to Fig. 5
^ Bearing supporting ring cannot be unscrewed until selector shaft has been removed; Parking lock, disassembling and assembling
^ Insert bearing supporting ring carefully. Sealing lip and spring must not be damaged.
^ Supporting ring with seal go to Fig. 6

14 - O-ring
^ Always replace
^ Place onto bearing supporting ring (item -13-)

15 - Oil seal for drive pinion
^ Remove with screwdriver
^ Installed position go to Fig. 6
^ Driving in go to Fig. 7

16 - Tapered roller bearing outer race
^ Driving in go to Fig. 9

17 - Tapered roller bearing inner race
^ Drive off with drift
^ Pressing on go to Fig. 10

- Remove locking bolt.
A - Torque wrench
- Tighten bearing supporting ring to 200 Nm and secure with locking bolt. Insert bolt with AKD 456 000 01.

Installed position of seal:
Open side (arrow) faces tapered roller bearing outer race

- Insert oil seal so that sealing lip faces special tool 30-204.
