Special tools and equipment
- VAG 1551 Scan Tool or vehicle system tester V.A.G 1552 with cable V.A.G 1551/3







- V.A.G 1788/10 Engine speed adjuster (only engine codes AWD, AWW)

Test sequence

- Connect VAG 1551 scan tool (V.A.G 1552). Start engine and select engine control module with "Address word" 01.

- Press keys 0 and 4 for function "Introduction of basic setting" and confirm entry with Q key.

Introduce basic setting HELP
Input display group number XXX

- Press keys 0, 3 and 4 for "Display group number 34" and confirm entry with Q key.

Indicated on display: (1 to 4 = Display zones)

System in basic setting 34 ->

Engine codes AWD, AWW
- Set engine speed to 1800 to 2200 RPM using speed regulator V.A.G 1788/10.
- Maintain engine speed at 1800 to 2200 RPM until display in display zone 4 jumps from "Test OFF" to "Test ON". Threeway catalytic converter temperature in display zone 2 must be between 350 and 500 degrees C.
- Continue to maintain speed at 1800 to 2200 RPM until specification "B1-S1 OK" appears in display zone 4.

Engine code AWP
- Depress brake pedal and hold.
- Press accelerator pedal to Wide Open Throttle (WOT) position.

Engine speed is increased by control module to approx. 2300 RPM.

- Hold both brake pedal and accelerator pedal depressed until display in display zone 4 jumps from "Test OFF" to "Test ON".

Three-way catalytic converter temperature in display zone 2 must be between 350 to 500 degrees C.

- Continue to hold both brake pedal and accelerator pedal depressed until result of function test is displayed in display zone 4.
Specification: "B1-S1 OK"

- Release accelerator pedal and brake pedal.

Continuation for all engine codes
If the display does not indicate as described:
- Check DTC memory.
- Read readiness code.
- Generate readiness code again if DTC memory has been erased or engine control module separated from permanent positive.

If the display indicates as described:
- Press C key.
- Press keys 0, 4 and 6 for "Display group number 46" and confirm entry with Q key.

Indicated on display: (1 to 4 = Display zones)

Basic setting 46 ->

Engine codes AWD, AWW
- Maintain engine speed at 1800 to 2200 RPM until display in display zone 4 jumps from "Test OFF" to "Test ON". Threeway catalytic converter temperature in display zone 2 must be at least 440 degrees C.
- Continue to maintain engine speed at 1800 to 2200 RPM until Specification "Cat B1 OK" appears in display zone 4.
- Remove engine speed adjuster V.A.G 1788/10 from accelerator pedal.

Engine code AWP
- Depress brake pedal and hold.
- Press accelerator pedal to Wide Open Throttle (WOT) position.

Engine speed is increased by control module to approx. 2300 RPM.

- Continue to hold both brake pedal and accelerator pedal depressed until result of function test is displayed in display zone 4.
Specification: "Cat. B1 OK"

- Release brake pedal and accelerator pedal.

Continuation for all engine codes

If "Cat. B1 not OK" appears in display zone 4:
- Check DTC memory.
- Read readiness code.
- Generate readiness code again if DTC memory has been erased or engine control module separated from permanent positive.
- If the specification "Cat B1 OK" is obtained:
- Press -> key.

- Press keys 0 and 6 for function "End output" and confirm entry with Q key.
- Switch ignition off.
