Drive/Propeller Shaft: Adjustments

Propshaft, adjusting, 01V, 5 SPD. A/T (AWD)

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required:

^ Adapters 3139/3
^ Alignment fixture 4W dr. shaft 3298
^ alignment fixture 4W dr. shaft 3405
^ Torque wrench 550 Nm V.A.G. 1331

^ Remove rear part of exhaust system.





^ Remove heat shield - A - from vehicle floor.

Propshaft with nominal dimension 60 mm at front and rear
When attaching and removing assembly tool, do not damage propshaft protective coating.
^ Do not set alignment fixture 4W dr. shaft 3405 on balance plates.





^ Attach alignment fixture 4W dr. shaft 3405 and tighten plastic nuts.

Propshaft with nominal dimension 60 mm at front and 70 mm at rear
When attaching and removing assembly tool, do not damage propshaft protective coating.
^ Do not set alignment fixture 4W dr. shaft 3298 on balance plates.





^ Attach alignment fixture 4W dr. shaft 3298 with adapters 3139/3 and tighten plastic nuts.

Propshaft with nominal dimension 60 mm at front and 65 mm at rear
When attaching and removing assembly tool, do not damage propshaft protective coating.





The reduced diameter - arrow - can be disregarded.
^ Do not set alignment fixture 4W dr. shaft 3298 on balance plates.
^ Attach alignment fixture 4W dr. shaft 3298 with adapters 3139/3 and tighten plastic nuts.

In the following illustrations, adjustment of propshaft is depicted using alignment fixture 4W dr. shaft 3298. Adjustment of propshaft using alignment fixture 4W dr. shaft 3405 is identical.





^ Remove securing nuts - arrows - for intermediate bearing.





^ Measure distances - a -.
^ They must be the same at right and left.

Table of shims
Allocate shims via original parts distributor.





Install determined shims as follows:





^ Loosen plastic nuts of installation device - arrows A - far enough so that the bracket for intermediate bearing - 2 - has clearance - a - on one side to stud bolt - 1 -.





^ Insert determined shim - 1 - and swing bracket - 2 - for intermediate bearing to other side.
^ Place second shim - 4 - onto stud bolt - 3 -.
^ Now tighten both plastic nuts of installation device - arrow A - again.

Now align propshaft lengthwise:
^ Slide propshaft with assembly fixture rearward up to limit stop.





^ Mark location of intermediate bearing to assembly - arrow A -.
^ Then, slide propshaft with assembly fixture forward up to limit stop.





^ Mark location of intermediate bearing to assembly - arrow B -.
^ Bolt intermediate bearing tightly in center position - arrow C -.
^ Then remove assembly fixture.
^ Install heat shield to vehicle floor.
^ Install rear part of exhaust system.
