Radial Run-Out at Flange/Propshaft, Measuring and Marking (Vehicles Without Threaded Holes In Facing Side of Rear Final Drive)
Radial play at flange/propshaft, measuring, 01V, 5 SPD. A/T (AWD)
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required:
^ Dial gauge holder VW387
^ Installation arbor VW792
^ Torque wrench 550 Nm V.A.G. 1331
^ Dial gauge
Always measure radial run-out if flange has been removed.
Radial run-out can be measured with rear final drive installed.
If a new propshaft is installed and the color marking on the flanged shaft of the rear final drive is no longer visible, location of largest radial run-out (corresponding to greatest distance from turning axis) must be determined and marked with a color marking.
Align this colored dot with colored dot on propshaft.
^ Disconnect propshaft from rear final drive and tie up.
^ Remove right shielding plate from rear final drive.
^ Install installation arbor VW792 in center hole - arrow - for right shielding plate/drive axle.
^ Install dial gauge holder VW387, with dial gauge, to installation arbor VW792.
^ Set dial indicator to zero with 1 mm pre-load and place on ground diameter - arrow - in flange.
^ Rotate both rear wheels simultaneously in one direction and thereby turn flange through one complete rotation.
^ Make a paint marking at the point of greatest radial run-out on the outside of the flange (greatest distance from axis of rotation).
^ Then remove the previous marking from the flange.
^ When installing propshaft, markings on flange for propshaft - arrow A - and for rear final drive - arrow B - must then line up.
^ Install propshaft.
