^ Sealing grease G052128A1
^ Thread locking compound D000600
^ 2 hex bolts M8 x 30
^ Hex bolt M10 x 10010.9
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
Torque wrench 40-200 NM V.A.G. 1332:
^ Engine-/gearbox jack V.A.G 1383 A with universal transmission support V.A.G1 359/2
Removing
^ Only when there is no marking present, apply color marks for position of rear propshaft to constant velocity joint - arrows A and B -.
Vehicles with threaded hole in facing side of rear final drive
^ Screw hex bolt M10 x 10010.9 - 3 - into rear final drive.
^ To loosen bolts - 1 - for propshaft at front and rear, counterhold using a lever - 2 -.
^ Remove the three upper bolts on each propshaft constant velocity joint.
Vehicles without threaded hole in facing side of rear final drive
^ Lower vehicle.
^ Insert brake pedal depressor V.A.G. 1869/2.
^ Operate brake pedal using brake pedal depressor V.A.G. 1869/2.
^ Raise vehicle.
^ Remove lower three mounting bolts for each propshaft constant velocity joint.
^ Lower vehicle.
^ Remove brake pedal depressor V.A.G. 1869/2.
^ Raise vehicle.
^ Rotate both rear wheels in one direction and then rotate propshaft 12 (180°) additional turn.
^ Lower vehicle.
^ Insert brake pedal depressor V.A.G. 1869/2.
^ Engage the brake pedal using the brake pedal loading device.
^ Raise vehicle.
Continued for all vehicles
^ Remove the three remaining bolts from the front and rear constant velocity joints.
^ Disconnect propshaft from rear final drive and tie up.
^ Place engine-/gearbox jack V.A.G 1383 A with universal transmission support V.A.G. 1359/2 under rear final drive and secure rear final drive.
^ Unscrew securing bolts from transmission support - arrows
^ Lower rear final drive carefully until the flange is accessible.
^ Mark position of drive pinion nut with paint.
Dimension "a" and dimension "b", determining
^ Distance of flange to drive pinion = dimension "a"
^ Distance of flange to securing nut for drive pinion = dimension "b".
^ Take note of the determined dimensions.
^ Then screw on retainer 3028 and unscrew securing nut for drive pinion.
Re-use previously installed hex nut for securing flange to drive pinion. Otherwise the original installation position cannot be determined again.
^ Screw 2 hex bolts M8x30 - A - in flange.
^ Pull off flange using puller VW391.
^ Place drip tray V.A.G. 1306 underneath.
^ Pull out sealing ring.
Installing
Installation is performed in the reverse order of removal. Pay attention to the following:
^ Always replace O-ring behind flange.
^ Coat outer circumference and sealing lips of sealing ring with axle oil.
^ Fill area between sealing lip and dust lip halfway with sealing grease G052128A1.
^ Drive new seal in as far as the stop; be sure not to distort seal.
^ Flanged shaft for propshaft onto pinion far enough until the nut can be installed.
^ Drive pinion thread and nut for flange must be cleaned of any residue of grease and coated lightly with thread locking compound D000600.
^ Insert previous hex nut and tighten to the marked position.
Measurement check, performing - checking dimension "a" and dimension "b"
^ O-ring - 1 - must be installed for measurement procedure.
^ Hex nut must stand exactly at marked position.
Deviation of measurement may be ± 0.3 mm.
^ Secure the hex nut.
^ If the position of propshaft to flange/propshaft was marked before removal, propshaft must be installed again in the same position.
^ Determine radial run-out at flange/propshaft.
^ Tighten securing bolts for transmission support - arrows -.
^ Then install propshaft to rear final drive.
^ Check gear oil in rear final drive.
