Left Flanged Shaft Oil Seal, Replacing

Left flanged shaft oil seal, replacing, 01V, 5 SPD. A/T (AWD)
^ Observe general repair notes.

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required:

^ Thrust plate VW401
^ Thrust plate VW402
^ Punch VW407
^ Thrust disc VW412
^ Extractor lever VW681
^ Driving sleeve 32-109

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required:

^ Press tube 2040
^ Assembly mandrel 3384
^ Torque wrench 550 Nm V.A.G. 1331
^ Torque wrench 40-200NM V.A.G. 1332
^ Oil extraction device V.A.G. 1358A
^ Sealing grease G052128A1

Left flanged shaft, removing
^ Loosen bolt for left drive axle/wheel hub and right and left wheel bolts only when vehicle is standing on its wheels.
^ Remove front wheels.

Vehicles with TDI engine





^ Remove noise insulation for drive axle from wheel housing at left and right - arrows

Vehicles with V6- and V8-engine





^ Remove shielding plate/drive axle - arrows - on left side. The third bolt is not visible in the illustration.

Continued for all vehicles
^ Remove left drive axle - 1 -.
^ Place drip tray V.A.G. 1306 underneath.





^ Unscrew sealing plug for checking transmission fluid - arrow - and extract 0.5 L axle oil from front final drive using oil extraction unit V.A.G. 1358A.

Axle oil must always be extracted from front final drive because axle oil will be mixed with ATF otherwise.

^ Remove Speedometer Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS).
^ Remove holder for connector from flanged shaft mounting bracket.





^ Remove flanged shaft mounting bracket - arrows
^ Pull out flanged shaft.

Oil seal, removing





^ Remove circlip - arrow A - for grooved ball bearing.





^ Press flanged shaft out of flanged shaft mounting bracket.
^ Remove flanged shaft seal using extractor lever VM81.

Grooved ball bearing, removing





^ Press grooved ball bearing out of mounting bracket.

Grooved ball bearing, installing





^ Press new grooved ball bearing into mounting bracket.

Oil seal, installing
^ Coat outer circumference and sealing lips of sealing ring with axle oil.
^ Fill area between sealing lip and dust lip halfway with sealing grease G052128A1.





^ Drive in new sealing ring to stop of sealing ring installer, do not distort while doing this.

Installation position: The followers at drive gear must engage in grooves of flanged shaft.





^ Set drive gear for Speedometer Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) on flanged shaft - arrow -.





^ Press mounting bracket with grooved ball bearing onto flanged shaft.





^ Insert circlip - arrow A -.

Left flanged shaft, installing





^ Replace O-ring - arrow B - in flanged shaft mounting bracket.





^ Check flanged shaft for sharp edges on transmission side of flange end - arrow - and if necessary, deburr.
^ Install flanged shaft.





^ Bolt on flanged shaft mounting bracket - arrows -.
^ Install holder for connector to flanged shaft mounting bracket.
^ Install Speedometer Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS).





^ Install left drive axle - 1 -.
^ Check axle oil in front final drive with transmission installed.

Vehicles with V6- and V8-engine
^ Install shielding plate/drive axle - arrows - on left side. Third bolt is not visible in the illustration.

Vehicles with TDI engine





^ Install noise insulation - arrows - for drive axles at wheel housing on left and right.

^ Install front wheels.
