Flanged Shaft Seals, Replacing (When Transmission Is Installed)
Flanged shaft seals, replacing (when transmission is installed), 01A, 5 SPD. M/T (AWD)
(Transmission installed)
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required:
^ Puller T10037
^ Driver VW 195
^ Needle bearing drift VW 295
^ Needle bearing drift VW 295 A
^ Extractor lever VW 681
^ Torque wrench V.A.G. 1332
Removing
^ Turn steering as far as possible toward left.
^ Remove cover plates over right drive axle - arrow 1 - and - arrow 2 -.
^ Remove cover plate, if installed, over left drive axle.
^ Place drip tray underneath.
^ Remove drive axle from flanged shaft.
^ Tie up drive axle as far away as possible. This ensures that drive axle paint is not damaged.
Replacing left seal:
^ Remove flange shaft, to do so tightly screw puller T10037 on cover for differential housing - arrow -.
Replacing right seal:
^ Remove flange shaft, to do so tightly screw puller T10037 on transmission housing - arrow -.
^ Always replace circlip for drive flange.
^ Clamp flanged shaft in vise with protective jaws. Press circlip with new circlip - A - out of flanged shaft groove.
^ Remove drive flange seal using extractor lever VW 681.
Installing
^ Drive in new right-hand drive flange seal 5.5 mm below transmission housing surface, without canting.
^ Lubricate sealing lip and dust lip with multi-purpose grease.
^ Drive in new left-hand drive flange seal 5.5 mm below surface of cover, without canting.
^ Drive in flange shaft using centering mandrel VW 295.
^ Bolt driveshaft on drive flange.
^ Bolt on cover plates for drive axle, if present.
^ Fill up gear oil.
