Flange Shaft/Drive Shaft Seal, Replacing



Flange shaft/drive shaft seal, replacing, 01A, 5 SPD. M/T (AWD)
(Transmission installed)

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
^ Extractor lever VW 681
^ Installation drift 30 - 505
^ Press support 30 - 506 B
^ Engine/transmission jack VAG 1383 A
^ Floor jack mount
^ Multi-purpose grease

Removing
^ Disconnect driveshaft from transmission.
^ Slide driveshaft back to stop and tie up.
^ Disconnect exhaust system at catalytic converter.





^ Loosen all mounting bolts for torque support stop - arrow -.





^ Place Engine/transmission jack VAG 1383 A with floor jack mount under transmission.
^ Raise transmission slightly.
^ Remove right bonded rubber bushing - arrows A -.
^ Left transmission support must be removed from bonded rubber bushing - arrow B -.
^ If left bonded rubber bushings is identical to right one, it must also be removed.
^ Carefully lower transmission.

Flange for driveshaft must be located right below driveshaft.





^ Remove circlip - A -.
^ Screw one M8 bolt into threaded hole of sealing cap - B -.
^ Pull out sealing cap - B - with bolt.





^ Spread circlip and pull out flange shaft while doing so.
^ Remove drive flange seal using extractor lever VW 681.

Installing
Installation is performed in reverse order of removal. When doing this, install engine/transmission bearing free of tension.





^ Drive in new flange shaft seal 2 mm below transmission housing surface, without canting.
^ Lubricate sealing lip and dust lip with multi-purpose grease.
^ Insert flange shaft.





^ Circlip for flange shaft must then be inserted with it simultaneously.
^ Circlip must be fully seated in groove.
^ Then insert sealing cap and secure it.
^ Fill up gear oil.
^ Connect driveshaft.

Tightening torques:
