Adjustment Shim "S4", Determining Again When Replacing Transmission Cover
Adjustment shim "S4", determining again when replacing transmission cover, 01A, 5 SPD. M/T (AWD)
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
^ Depth gauge with minimum 5/100 mm measurement accuracy
^ Assembly tool VW 792/1
^ Dial gauge holder VW 387
^ 2 x centering discs VW 385/3
^ Magnetic plate 50 mm dia. VW 385/17
^ Dial gauge
^ Dial gauge extension
^ Clean housing mating surfaces.
^ Measure difference in depth - a - on old and new transmission cover.
Example:
Install thicker shim "S4", if new transmission cover is deeper.
^ Install thinner shim "S4", if old transmission cover is deeper.
Example:
Available adjustment shims.
Insert outer race for tapered roller bearing with adjustment shim "S4" into transmission cover
^ Install fully assembled pinion shaft into transmission housing.
^ Install transmission cover and tighten bolts to 25 Nm.
^ Turn drive pinion with hollow shaft against hollow shaft 5 rotations in both directions to settle tapered roller bearings.
^ Install measuring tools and secure to transmission housing with bolt - arrow -.
^ Set gauge (3 mm measuring range) to "0" with 2 mm preload.
^ Loosen transmission cover bolts and turn drive pinion.
^ Dial gauge must now display the following value for correctly selected adjustment shims:
^ 0.05 to 0.15 mm
If this value is not obtained, adjustment must be corrected.
