Selector mechanism, disassembling and assembling, disassembly and assembly sequence, 01V, 5 SPD. A/T (AWD)
Disassembling
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
Tube 28mm dia. 210 mm VW421:
Sleeve VW423:
^ Polycarbamide grease G052142A2
Lubricate bearing areas and slide surfaces with polycarbamide grease G052142A2.
^ Remove selector mechanism.
^ First remove stop buffers from cable lever.
^ Shift selector lever into Tiptronic position and then remove frame.
^ Place selector lever in position "2".
^ Disengage lever for locking cable by lifting it out of its bearing and remove from selector mechanism housing.
^ Place selector lever in position "D".
^ Catch spring for Tiptronic position is carefully pried out of the selector mechanism housing from the outside.
^ Pull out securing plate for bushings of selector lever.
^ Using a screwdriver, press out bushings for selector lever outward.
^ Remove complete selector lever.
Disassemble selector lever.
^ To remove bearing for Tiptronic position of selector lever, unlatch retaining tabs (3 pieces) at selector mechanism housing at outside and remove bearing inward.
^ Press out bearing pin for locking latch using a drift. While doing this, support selector mechanism housing on sleeve VW423.
^ Remove shift lock solenoid together with locking latch upward.
^ Catch spring for selector lever positions is carefully pried out of the selector mechanism housing from the outside.
^ Place cable lever in park position.
^ First press out the left and then the right bearing pin from inside using a drift.
^ Pull cable lever with catch in park position upward out of selector mechanism housing.
^ Unclip catch from the cable lever.
Assembling
^ Clip catch into cable lever.
^ Slide cable lever with catch from above into the selector mechanism housing with opening - arrow - of the catch forward.
^ Drive in both bearing pins for cable lever with catch to stop into selector mechanism housing. While doing this, support selector mechanism housing from inside.
^ Press catch spring with roller for selector lever position into its mount in selector mechanism housing up to stop.
^ Shift lock solenoid must be slid together with locking latch into the selector mechanism housing from the top.
^ Carefully drive in pin for locking latch. While doing this, support selector mechanism housing on sleeve VW423.
^ Press bearing for Tiptronic position into selector mechanism housing from inside. Retaining tabs (3 pieces) must engage.
^ Insert complete selector lever into selector mechanism housing.
^ Hook selector lever into cable lever at bottom and top.
^ Slide both bushings for selector lever into the selector mechanism housing at front or rear.
^ Install new securing plate for bushings into selector mechanism housing so that the angled ends point inward.
^ Press catch spring for Tiptronic position into its mount in selector mechanism housing up to stop.
^ Place selector lever in position "2".
^ Lay locking cable lever into selector mechanism housing and engage it noticeably in both bearing areas.
^ Check locking function of locking cable lever. In selector lever position "P", it must engage in the catch and lock the selector mechanism.
^ Place selector lever in Tiptronic position.
^ Set frame onto selector mechanism housing (ribbing points upward) and insert buffer stop into cable lever.
^ Install selector mechanism.
^ Check ignition key removal lock.
Selector lever, disassembling and assembling
^ Remove selector mechanism.
^ Remove selector lever.
Disassembling
^ Using a drift, drive out bearing pin for selector lever as shown in illustration.
^ Slide gate with Tiptronic spring with raised pull-rod out of the selector lever.
^ Release tension of compression spring and also remove pull-rod and compression spring from the selector lever.
^ Pry out gate cover on both sides.
^ Using a screwdriver, carefully pry out springs - 1 - and - 2 - and press piece (3 pieces) for Tiptronic spring - arrow
Assembling
^ Insert guides - C - to stop so that thin rib points to pull-rod.
^ Set compression spring - B - onto pull-rod - A -.
^ Guide pull-rod with retaining spring into the selector lever.
Installation position: Rounded area - arrow - points in direction of travel.
^ Check whether the pull-rod glides on both guides - C - of selector lever.
Assemble Tiptronic spring as follows:
^ Press in a gate cover.
^ Insert by hand a short spring - 1 - and two long springs - 2 - with press pieces (3 pieces) into gate.
^ Lightly grease Tiptronic spring with polycarbamide grease G052142A2 and insert.
^ Press in second gate cover.
^ Slide gate - B - with Tiptronic spring mechanism into selector lever - A - with pull-rod - D - raised.
^ Drive in selector lever bearing pin - C - using a drift.
^ To secure, make two new center punch marks - arrows - offset by 90° to the existing ones.
Bearing pin can then have a maximum of 4 center punch marks.
^ Install selector lever.
^ Install selector mechanism.
