Shift Cable: Service and Repair



Selector lever cable, removing and installing, 01V, 5 SPD. A/T (AWD)

Removing

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Pry lever - rmv outside mirror 80-200:




Torque wrench 550 Nm V.A.G. 1331:








^ For vehicles with auxiliary heater, remove bolts - arrows - from exhaust pipe at noise insulation.





^ Remove noise insulation - arrows A and B -.
^ For vehicles with noise insulation - D -, remove bolts - arrows C -

Vehicles with V6- and V8-engine
^ Removing front exhaust system with catalytic converter.
^ Remove heat shield/selector lever cable.

Continued for all vehicles
^ Removing left transmission support.
^ Unbolt propshaft from transmission and tie up or support.





^ Remove cover from selector mechanism housing - arrows -.

Disconnect selector lever cable from selector lever mechanism housing:





^ Press ends of locking clip - B - together and remove.
^ Remove securing plate - A - for selector lever cable at selector mechanism downward.
^ Pull selector lever cable off selector lever.





^ Pry off selector lever cable from lever/selector shaft - arrow -.
^ Remove mounting bracket from transmission.
^ Disconnect selector lever cable from mounting bracket.
^ Pull selector lever cable out of selector mechanism housing, do not kink selector lever cable while doing so.

Installing
^ Do not bend or kink, lightly grease cable eye and ball socket before installing.





^ Press selector lever cable - 1 - completely toward front - arrow -.
^ Place lever/selector shaft - 2 - on transmission in direction of - arrow - in "2".
^ Grease ball socket of selector lever cable with polycarbamide grease G052142A2.
^ Carefully press ball head of selector lever cable - 1 - onto lever of selector shaft.

Do not deform selector shaft lever - 2 - when pressing on or else shifting cannot be precisely adjusted any more.

^ Shift the lever/selector shaft - 2 - at the transmission in "P" position. Catch must engage in parking lock gear, both front wheels are locked (cannot be turned together in one direction).
^ Do not bend or kink, lightly grease cable eye and ball socket before installing.
^ Press selector lever cable carefully on lever/selector shaft - 2 - using pliers.

Do not deform selector shaft lever when pressing on or else shifting cannot be precisely adjusted any more.

^ Guide selector lever cable into selector lever mechanism housing.
^ Grease ball socket of selector lever cable with polycarbamide grease G052142A2.
^ Connect selector lever cable to selector lever.

Installation position:





Angled end of new securing plate - A - points toward the end of the selector lever cable.

^ Install new securing plate - A - for selector lever cable to selector mechanism housing.
^ Press ends of locking clip - B - together and slide onto the end of the selector lever cable.
^ Connect selector lever cable to mounting bracket hand-tight.
^ Fasten mounting bracket to transmission hand4ight.
^ Align selector lever cable in mounting bracket.





^ Tighten bracket/transmission - arrows 1 - to tightening torque.
^ Tighten selector lever/bracket - arrow 2 - to tightening torque. During this, counterhold at hex socket - arrow 3 -.





^ Tighten nuts - arrows -.
^ Check adjustment of selector lever cable and adjust if necessary.
^ Connect propshaft to flange.
^ Install left transmission support.

Vehicles with V6- and V8-engine
^ Install heat shield/selector lever cable.
^ Install front exhaust pipe with catalytic converter.

Continued for all vehicles





^ Install noise insulation - arrows -.
^ In vehicles with auxiliary heater, bolt exhaust pipe firmly to noise insulation.
