Starter Motor: Service and Repair
Starter - 4-cyl. & 6-cyl. Engine, Removing And Installing
CAUTION:
Before beginning repairs on the electrical system:
- Obtain the anti-theft radio security code.
- Switch off all electrical consumers.
- Switch ignition off and remove ignition key.
- Disconnect negative (-) battery terminal.
- When disconnecting and reconnecting battery terminals, observe all applicable Notes and torque specifications, as well as instructions on performing OBD program and electrical system function checks.
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items needed
- VAG 1331 Torque wrench (or equivalent 5 - 50 Nm )
- VAG 1332 Torque wrench (or equivalent 40 - 200 Nm )
Removing
- Disconnect battery.
NOTE:
- On vehicles with restricted access to the engine compartment, it may become necessary to bring the lock carrier/radiator support into service position.
- Depending on engine type and additional equipment, it may become necessary to loosen the engine mounts and then lift the engine slightly with engine support bridge 10-222 A.
- Depending on engine and transmission type, it may become necessary to loosen the a/c refrigerant hoses from their mounting locations.
- Depending on engine and transmission type, it may become necessary to loosen or remove the lines from the automatic transmission to the oil cooler.
- Depending on engine and transmission type, it may become necessary to loosen or remove the drive axle cover/heat shield.
- Unclip terminal 50 connector -1- and remove.
- Remove nut -2- at starter solenoid terminal 30 and remove connector eyelet from terminal. Tightening torque: 13 Nm (10ft.. lb)
- Loosen and remove clamp which secures heat shield to starter.
Starter mounting bracket to engine block
NOTE: Bracket -c- may not be installed on some engine/transmission types.
- Remove M8 nut -arrow A-.
- Tightening torque: 22Nm (16ft. lb.).
- Remove both M5 nuts -arrows B-, and remove retaining bracket.
- Tightening torque 4 Nm (35 in lb).
Starter mounting to transmission
NOTE: End view of 4-cylinder engine with manual transmission is illustrated here. 6-cylinder engine and automatic transmission versions are similar.
- Remove upper bolt -1- from transmission housing.
- Tightening torque: 65 Nm (48ft. lb.).
- Remove lower bolt -2- from from transmission housing.
- Tightening torque: 65 Nm (48 ft. lb.).
Installing
Install in reverse order of removal, noting tightening torques specified above.
- Reconnect battery.
