Procedures


Valve stem oil seals, replacing
(with cylinder head installed)






Special tools and equipment
^ VAG1331 torque wrench (5 to 50 Nm)
^ VAG1332 torque wrench (40 to 200 Nm)
^ 3122B spark plug removal tool
^ 3364 valve seat tool VW653/3 pressure hose
^ 3362 valve spring tool and 3362/1 pressure piece

Removing
- Remove camshafts, Refer to Camshaft, Lifters and Push Rods.
- Remove valve lifters and place aside with contact surface down. Be careful not to switch valve lifters.
- Unscrew spark plugs using 3122B spark plug removal tool.
- Move piston for individual cylinder to Bottom Dead Center (BDC) position.
- Bolt VW653/3 Pressure Hose into spark plug thread.





- Using retaining bolts bolted in tool secure 3362 Valve Spring Tool to cylinder head.
- Bring assembly device for pressing together valve springs into the following position: Exhaust valves: Lower position Center intake valve: Upper position Exhaust valve: Lower position
- Connect pressure hose to pressurized air of at least 6 bar positive pressure and remove valve springs.





- Remove valve stem oil seals using 3364 valve seat tool.

Installing





- Attach the plastic sleeves provided to the respective valve stem. This will help avoid damage to new valve stem oil seals.
- Insert new valve stem oil seal into 3365 valve stem seal driver.
- Grease lip of valve stem oil seal and carefully slide onto valve guide.
The rest of the installation follows the reverse of the removal procedures.
