Front Crankshaft Seal: Service and Repair


Seal for crankshaft (ribbed belt side)
Special tools and equipment





^ 3203 seal remover
^ 3415 counterhold
^ T10053 mounting device
^ VAG1331 torque wrench (5 to 50 Nm)
^ VAG1332 torque wrench (40 to 200 Nm)

Removing
- Remove ribbed belt and tensioner, Refer to Drive Belts, Mounts, Brackets and Accessories.
- Toothed belt, removing, Refer to Timing Components.





- Unbolt stop -1- (arrows).





- Remove crankshaft toothed belt gear. Secure toothed belt gear using 3415 spur belt spreading.





- To guide seal puller, thread central bolt in crankshaft by hand until stop.
- Unscrew inner portion of 3203 seal remover nine rotations (approximately 20 mm) from outer portion and secure with knurled-head screw.





- Grease threaded head of 3203 seal remover, position and forcefully screw as far as possible into oil seal.
- Loosen knurled bolt and turn inner part against crankshaft until oil seal is removed.

Installing

Note: Introduction of PTFE-oil seals (identification: without annular spring, sealing lip has a wider design). The sealing lip of these oil seals may not be oiled or greased.

- Remove oil residue at crankshaft pin using a clean rag.





- Attach T10053/1 guide sleeve on crankshaft pin.
- Slide oil seal over guide sleeve onto the crankshaft pin.





- Press in oil seal using T10053 pressure sleeve and T10053/2 bolt (M16 x 1.5 x 60) up to stop.





- Install toothed belt gear-crankshaft using a new bolt and secure with 3415 retainer.
Tightening torque: 90 Nm + 1/4 turns (90°) turn

Note: Threads and collar must be completely free of oil and grease.

- Install torque support stop.
Tightening torque: 30 Nm
