Crankshaft: Service and Repair
Crankshaft, removing and installing
Notes:
^ Before removing crankshaft, prepare for appropriate storage, so that sensor wheel (item 9) does not make contact or become damaged.
^ For engine disassembly and assembly, mount engine to assembly stand using VW 540 holding fixture and VW54011B adapter set.
1- Oil pump
^ Removing and installing, Refer to Engine Lubrication.
2- 15 Nm
3- Chain sprocket
^ For operating oil pump
4- Bearing shells 1, 2,3,4 and 5
^ Classification for replacement part ordering, see Fig. 1
^ For bearing cap without lubrication groove
^ For engine block with lubrication groove
^ Do not interchange run-in connecting rod bearing shells (mark)
5- 65 Nm + 90° (1/4 additional turns)
^ Always replace
^ Continuous thread
^ Tighten to 65 Nm for measuring radial play of crankshaft
6- Bearing caps
^ Bearing cap 1: Belt pulley side
^ Retaining tabs for engine block/bearing cover must align
7- Bearing shell 3
^ = Item 4
^ Do not interchange run-in connecting rod bearing shells (mark)
8- Needle bearing
^ Only vehicles with manual transmission
^ Removing and installing, Refer to Clutch, M/T.
9- Sensor wheel
^ Always replace
^ For Engine Speed (RPM) sensor -G28
^ Installation only possible in one position (bore holes offset)
10- 10 Nm + 1/4 turns (90°) turn
^ Always replace
11- Thrust washer
^ For bearing cover, bearing 3
^ Check locating point
12- Crankshaft
^ Axial play when new: 0.07 to 0.23 mm wear limit: 0.30 mm
^ Measure radial play with Plastigage again: 0.02 to 0.04 mm wear limit: 0.15 mm
^ Do not turn crankshaft when measuring radial play.
^ Crankshaft dimensions, Refer to Specifications.
^ Different version for manual transmission and automatic transmission; observe part number
13- Thrust washer
^ For mounting bracket, bearing 3
^ Check locating point
Fig. 1 Identification on crankshaft bearing, top
In the factory, the upper bearing shells are assigned to the cylinder block with the correct thickness. Colored dots serve for identifying bearing shell thickness.
Note: Arrow points in direction of travel.
The letters marked on the lower sealing surface of the cylinder block identify which bearing thickness must to be installed in which location.
Color identification
As replacement parts, the lower crankshaft bearing shells are always supplied with "yellow" color identification.
