Brake pads, removing and installing

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required





^ Reset and screw out tool 3272
^ Plate 3272/1
^ Torque wrench V.A.G 1331

Removing

Note: If reusing brake pads, mark location. Install in same position when installing otherwise uneven braking will occur!

- Remove wheels.

This work step is for vehicles with front wheel drive (FWD) only





- Pull out securing clip - 1 - and unhook parking brake cable from brake caliper.

Continued for all vehicles





- Remove securing bolts from brake caliper housing, while counter holding on guide pins.
- Remove brake caliper housing and secure with wire so that the weight of the brake caliper does not stress or damage the brake hose.
- Remove brake pads.
- Clean brake caliper housing, in particular the adhesion surface for brake pads. This must be free of adhesive residue and grease.

Clean brake caliper with mineral spirits exclusively.

Installing

Note: Before pressing the piston back, extract brake fluid from the brake fluid reservoir. To extract brake fluid from the brake fluid reservoir, use a bleeder bottle that only comes into contact with brake fluid. Brake fluid is poisonous and must never be extracted by mouth using a hose!





- Install piston by turning knurled wheel of reset and screw out tool 3272 clockwise, do not damage protective cap.
- Use plate 3272/1 to aid in installing.

Note:
^ Install reset and screw out tool 3272 in such a way that the collar of the tool is seated on plate 3272/1.
^ If the piston is difficult to move, use a 13 mm open end wrench on flats - arrow A - provided for this purpose.

- Remove protective foil from backing plates of new brake pads.





- Install brake pads.
- Secure brake caliper housing with new self-locking bolts.

Note: The repair kit includes four self-locking hex bolts which must be installed.

These work steps are for vehicles with Front Wheel Drive (FWD) only
- Fasten parking brake cable to brake caliper housing.
- Adjust parking brake.

After adjusting parking brake, actuate the brake pedal first.

Continued for all vehicles
- Install wheels.

Note:
^ After replacing brake pads, depress brake pedal firmly several times with vehicle stationary so that the brake pads are properly seated in their normal operating position.
^ After changing brake pads check brake fluid level.
