C54 brake caliper, servicing,
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
^ Torque wrench V.A.G 1331
^ Torque wrench V.A.G 1410
^ Brake pedal depressor V.A.G 1869/2
Note:
^ After replacing brake pads, depress brake pedal firmly several times with vehicle stationary so that the brake pads are properly seated in their normal operating position.
^ To extract brake fluid from the brake fluid reservoir, use a bleeder bottle that only comes into contact with brake fluid. Brake fluid is poisonous and must never be extracted by mouth using a hose!
^ Torque specification for wheel bolts.
1 - Brake hose
^ Do not disconnect brake hose when changing brake pads
2 - Spring clip
3 - Brake line, 15 Nm
^ Install into brake caliper housing
^ Installed together with brake hose, held against the hex nut of the brake hose.
^ Make sure that lugs are properly seated in grooves in bracket.
4 - Self-locking hex bolt, 35 Nm
^ Always replace
^ When loosening and tightening counter hold on guide pin
5 - Ribbed bolt, 120 Nm
^ If re-using, clean ribs
6 - Brake carrier with guide pins and protective cap
^ Supplied as replacement part assembled with sufficient grease on guide pins
^ If protective caps or guide pins are damaged use repair kit. Use grease packet supplied to lubricate guide pins.
7 - Brake disc
^ Ventilated brake disc: 280 mm diameter
^ Brake disc thickness: 22 mm
^ Wear limit: 20 mm
^ When worn always replace both sides
^ Remove brake caliper prior to removing
^ Do not use excessive force to separate the brake rotor from the wheel hub. If necessary, use rust penetrant, otherwise the brake rotors could be damaged.
8 - Brake pads
^ Without wear indicator
^ Thickness 14 mm not including backing plate
^ Wear limit: 2 mm not including backing plate
9 - Heat shield
^ Set into the piston
10 - Brake caliper
^ Do not disconnect brake hose when changing brake pads
Removing:
^ Install brake pedal loading device V.A.G 1869/2
Installing:
^ Remove brake pedal loading device V.A.G 1869/2
^ Servicing C54 brake caliper, servicing
11 - Bracket
^ Bolt to brake caliper housing
12 - Hex bolt, 10 Nm
13 - Brake pads
^ With wear indicator
^ When wear limit is reached (limit: approx. 4 mm) warning lamp lights up on instrument panel
^ Thickness 14 mm not including backing plate
^ Wear limit: 2 mm not including backing plate
^ When worn always replace both sides
