Speedometer Gear, M/T: Service and Repair

Drive gear for speedometer, replacing, 012/01W, 5 SPD. M/T
(Transmission installed)

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required:

^ Needle Bearing Drift VW 295
^ Extractor Lever VW 681
^ Driver 2062
^ Puller T10037
^ Torque Wrench 5-50 Nm V.A.G. 1331
^ Torque Wrench 40-200 Nm V.A.G 1332

Removing
^ Turn steering as far as possible toward left.
^ Remove cover plate over left drive axle, if installed.
^ Unscrew drive axle from flange shaft.
^ Place drip tray underneath.





^ To remove drive flange, bolt Puller T10037 to differential cover - arrow -.
^ Remove drive flange seal using Extractor Lever VW 681.
^ Remove Speedometer Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS).

Replacing drive gear for speedometer:





^ Press retaining clips in direction of arrows using screwdriver.
^ Remove drive gear by prying off on alternating sides.

Installing
Installation is the reverse of removal, noting the following:

Installed position:





The drive peg of the drive gear - A - faces seal - B - and locks into groove in the differential.

The retaining clips - arrows - lock in the circumferential groove in the differential.

Always replace seal - B - and circlip - C -.
^ Drive in drive flange using Needle Bearing Drift VW 295.
^ Gear oil, checking.
