Shift Mechanism, Adjusting
Shift mechanism, adjusting, 012/01W, 5 SPD. M/T
Note:
^ Requirements for a correct shift adjustment are the following points:
^ Components of shift mechanism and linkage must be in proper working condition.
^ Shift mechanism must move freely
^ Furthermore, transmission, clutch and clutch mechanism must be in proper working condition.
^ Transmission in neutral
^ Carefully pry off shift lever boot from center console.
^ Remove shift knob with shift lever boot.
^ As of 11/00 remove shift knob with shift lever boot.
^ Rubber cover for shift mechanism housing must be removed - arrows -.
^ Measure distance between body and shift mechanism.
^ Distance - a - must be 41 mm.
^ If dimension - a - is not attained, proceed as follows:
^ Loosen pivot rod bolt - arrow -.
^ The connection pivot rod/shift mechanism must move easily.
^ Adjust dimension - a - by moving shift mechanism.
^ Tighten pivot rod bolt - arrow - to 25 Nm.
^ Loosen bolt for shift rod - arrow -.
^ The connection shift rod/shift mechanism must move freely.
^ Align shift lever so that it is positioned vertically.
^ Shift lever must slightly point toward rear (in direction of travel) - a -.
^ Tighten shift rod bolt to 25 Nm.
^ Install covers and shift knob
Function
^ Shift lever must rest in 3rd/4th shift gate when transmission is at idle.
^ Operate clutch.
^ Shift through all gears several times. Pay particular attention to function of reverse gear lock.
^ Shift lever should return by itself from the 5th/reverse gear and move into 3rd/4th shift gate.
^ Engaging reverse gear must only be possible when shift lever rests at idle in 3rd/4th shift gate.
^ When shift lever is engaged in 5th gear, straight shifting to reverse gear may not be possible.
Note:
^ If straight shifting is possible, or only 5th gear and reverse gear cannot be engaged, the 5th and reverse gear lock must be checked and replaced if necessary.
