Hydraulic Bonded Rubber Bushing, Removing and Installing
Hydraulic bonded rubber bushing, removing and installing
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required:
- Torque wrench V.A.G 1332
- Engine/transmission jack V.A.G 1383 A with universal transmission support V.A.G 1359/2
- Brake pedal depressor V.A.G 1869/2
- Tensioning strap T10038
- Wheel Hub Support T10149
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required:
- Hydraulic cylinder VAS 6178
- Foot pump VAS 6179
- Basic Set For Hydraulic Bearing VAS 6180
CAUTION: After removing the hydraulic bonded rubber bushing, only "conventional" bonded rubber bushing may still be installed.
Replacement must be performed on both sides of rear axle. A mixed installation is not permitted.
Removing
- Measure dimension from center of wheel to lower edge of wheel housing.
- Insert brake pedal depressor V.A.G 1869/2.
- Raise vehicle to installation height.
- Remove wheels.
- Disconnect brake lines - arrow A - and remove clip.
- Pull left brake hose out of holder - 2 -.
- Pull right brake hose out of rear axle.
- Remove parking brake cable from holders - arrow B -.
- Place Engine/transmission jack V.A.G 1383 A underneath.
- Remove mounting bracket bolt - 1 - at rear axle on both sides.
Vehicles in which point of bolt - 2 - points toward vehicle exterior (only valid for right side of vehicle):
- Loosen bolt - 2 - and remove nut.
- Mark installation position of mounting bracket for rear axle and remove mounting bracket from chassis.
- Pull bolt - 2 - out of mounting bracket.
Continued for all vehicles
- Lower rear axle using Engine/transmission jack V.A.G 1383 A.
- Secure rear axle using tensioning belt T10038 over exhaust system suspension.
Vehicles with automatic headlight range control
- Remove coupling rod of Left Rear Level Control System Sensor G76 from rear axle.
Continued for all vehicles
CAUTION: Place engine/transmission jack V.A.G 1383 A with universal transmission support V.A.G 1359/2 under control arm (danger of accident from components falling out when pulling out bushing).
Pressing out core of hydraulic bonded rubber bushing
- Attach special tools as shown in illustration on to rear axle.
- Pull a plastic bag over special tools and control arm so that escaping oil can be caught when pressing out.
- Press out core of bonded rubber bushing.

Note: The word "Top" on the VAS 6180/8 points toward the control arm.
Installing
Only use "conventional" bonded rubber bushings for installation.
- Bonded rubber bushing is marked - 1 - on front side.
- These marks must align with edge - arrow - of trailing link - 2 -.
- Mark position of markings - 1 - on long side of bonded rubber bushing.
- Attach bonded rubber bushing and special tools to rear axle.

7. V.A.G 1383 A with V.A.G 1359/2
Note: The word "Top" on the VAS 6180/8 points toward the control arm.
- Before pressing in bonded rubber bushing, make sure that the marking - arrow A - applied earlier aligns with edge - arrow B - of trailing link.
- Press in bonded rubber bushing far enough until there is only a gap dimension of 0.2 mm - arrow -.
- Measure gap dimension - arrow - using a feeler gauge - A -.
- After installing, check installation position of bonded rubber bushing.
Secure vehicle to lifting platform.
CAUTION: If a vehicle is not secured, there is danger that the vehicle could slip off the hoist!
- Remove plug from longitudinal member - 3 - and pull in tensioning belt.
1. Lift arm of lifting platform
2. Tensioning strap T10038
- Vehicle must be secured by tensioning belts on right and left sides.
- Before installing rear axle grease kidney-shaped recesses of bonded rubber bushing with assembly paste G 052 150 A2.
If rear axle is inserted "when dry", noises may occur while driving.
Bolting mounting bracket at rear axle must only occur after dimension measured before installation between the wheel hub center and the lower edge of wheelhousing has been attained!
- Tighten threaded connection of mounting bracket to rear axle to tightening torque.
- Rest of installation is in reverse order of removal.
- Bleed brake system.
