Tie Rod, Removing and Installing



Tie rod, removing and installing

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required:





^ Holding fixture VW 313
^ Pliers V.A.G 1275
^ Torque wrench V.A.G. 1332
^ 34 mm open end wrench insert V.A.G 1332/5
^ Transmission holder T10108

Removing
Tie rods can only be removed and installed when steering gear has been removed.
Power steering gear, removing and installing.
- Seal line connections on power steering gear if not done already.
- Clean outside of power steering gear in area of boot.
- Open clamp and push back boot.





- Tension steering gear on transmission support T10108 and unscrew tie rods from steering rack.

Note: To clamp steering gear, use hole "5" and the matching hole lying opposite on transmission support.

Installing
Installation is performed in reverse order of removal.

Tightening torques

Installing boots
- Check boots for wear (slits, cracks) and check sealing surfaces of boots for dirt.
- Install boots. Rotate tie rod beforehand so that stud of tie rod end stands in installation position.

Note: Only use original clamps.





- Tighten clamp using Hose Clamp Pliers VAG 1275.
- Install power steering gear.
