Battery - New Beetle Sedan From 12.02, Removing and Installing
Battery - New Beetle Convertible From 08.02, Removing and Installing
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items needed
- VAG 1331 Torque wrench (or equivalent 5 - 50 Nm)
Removing
- Disconnect battery.
- Remove battery shield by pressing retainer clips -arrows- and pulling upwards -double arrows-.
- Remove bolt -1- and battery hold-down bracket -2-.
- Remove screw -1- (10 Nm) attaching both the power steering fluid reservoir and the battery positive ( + ) cable clip holder.
- Remove clip holder.
- Remove screw -2- (8.1 Nm) attaching air cleaner to battery platform.
CAUTION:
- Ensure that the power steering fluid reservoir, air cleaner or other components are not damaged upon removal of battery. Carefully move the reservoir, air cleaner and other components away from the battery area as necessary for clearance.
- Do not disconnect power steering hoses from reservoir.
- Carefully slide battery to left and lift from battery tray.
- Remove plastic retainer clip -1-.
- Remove battery shield by gently pressing down and sideways -arrow-.
CAUTION: Use care when removing battery shield in order to prevent damage to clips. See detail.
- If it is necessary to remove the battery carrier, remove screws (8.3 Nm) and remove battery carrier.
Installing
To be sure the battery seats securely, only install batteries with a 10.5 mm battery foot strip and adhere to the following work sequences:
- Install battery with insulation enclosure so lug of battery carrier (arrow) engages in battery groove -1-.
- It must not be possible to move the battery to the left or to the right.
The battery is correctly installed when the center groove in the battery foot strip aligns with threaded hole in the battery carrier (arrows).
- On batteries with hose for central venting make sure venting hose is not kinked. Only then can battery vent freely.
- On batteries without hose for central venting make sure opening on upper side of battery cover is not blocked.
Remaining installation is in reverse order of removal, noting the following:
- Install battery hold-down bracket -2- and tighten bolt -1- to 22 Nm (16 ft lb).
- Reconnect battery.
- Perform work steps specified in table.
CAUTION: After installing, check if the battery is seated securely. If the battery is not secured properly, the following will result:
- Shortened battery service life due to vibration damage
- Battery cell and plate damage
- Electrolyte leakage due to battery case damage
- Poor collision safety
