Passive Occupant Detection System (PODS) (USA), Removing and Installing
Removing
NOTE:
- All cables that are disconnected in order to remove PODS must be reconnected in original position when PODS is replaced.
- Before working with PODS system, observe how all cables are connected and routed.
- Disconnect battery ground (GND) strap.
- Remove front passenger's seat (install airbag adapter VAS 5094).
- Remove screw -arrow- on inner side of seat
- Remove plastic rivet -1- on front part of seat
- Remove plastic cover -2- by unclipping it from lower part of seat -3-.
- Remove screw -arrow-
- Unclip plastic part from seat -arrow-
- Press seat cover as shown and pull away from seat frame -arrow-
- Press seat cover as shown and pull away from seat frame -arrow-
- Remove cover from seat by pulling cover away -arrows-.
NOTE:
- In this case, seat cover can be removed without removing seat backrest
- Fold seat's backrest as needed
- Cut white plastic strap -1- from seat padding
NOTE:
- On replacement part, same strap must not be separated from padding under any circumstance.
- Observe how heating element cables are routed to ease reassembly
- Remove heater element from seat padding by carefully separating both items.
- Cut clips -arrows-
- Release sensor connector -1-
- Disconnect belt tension sensor connector by pressing downward and then inward -arrow-
- Disconnect connector -2- and release from holding position
- Remove cables as needed from routing clips -3-
NOTE:
- Release lock on top of control unit connector's head -1- in order to reconnect replacement part
- Before removing cables from routing clips -3-, observe how they are connected and routed
- Remove cables as needed from routing clips
NOTE: Before removing cables from routing clips, observe how they are connected and routed
- Remove hose clips -arrows- from supporting base
NOTE: Before discarding clips make sure that replacement part includes them, otherwise reuse them
If clips are missing, make sure to attach them to replacement hose properly in order to get loop shape of hose shown in illustration
- Remove Torx (r) screws -1-.
- Remove nuts -2-.
- Remove screw -4-.
- Remove control unit -5- from bracket -3-.
- Remove bracket -3-.
NOTE: Metallic bracket must only be removed if it shows to be damaged or if PODS's control unit and pressure sensor does not fit through hole
- Pass control unit and pressure sensor through hole -arrow-
NOTE: Illustration shows metallic supporting bracket installed to seat tray
- Remove sensor mat from seat tray.
Installing
Before installing read following notes:
NOTE:
- Make sure that replacement sensor mat is not damaged during installation.
- Advice / warning stickers on connectors must not be damaged or removed
- Make sure that no connections from replacement kit are disconnected while installing
- When reinstalling heater element to seat padding make sure to adhere it properly
- When reinstalling seat cover to seat padding, make sure that velcro pads on both parts adhere firmly to each other
- On replacement part, strap that connects sensor mat to seat's padding must not be damaged under any circumstance.
- After installing PODS, with the help of the VAS 5051/5052 in Guided Function, make sure to perform "Basic setting for seat occupant detection", in order to match Airbag ECU and Seat sensor ECU and "Back up seat occupant detection", in order to set up empty seat parameters concerning Seat sensor ECU.
- Install in reverse order of removal.
- Connect battery ground (GND) strap.
- Close doors.
- After installing all components, switch ignition on.
