Valve Guide Seal: Service and Repair
Valve stem seals, replacing
(with cylinder head installed)

Removing
- Remove camshaft.
- Remove hydraulic lifters and place lifters with contact surface downward. When doing this ensure that lifters are not interchanged.
- Pull connectors off outer injectors.
- Disconnect spark plug connectors with assembly tool T10112.
- Remove spark plugs with spark plug wrench 3122B.
- Place piston of respective cylinder at "bottom dead center".
- Install adjustable rod 2036 and adjust mountings to height of studs.
- Screw seal installer VW653/3 into spark plug thread.
- Connect hose to compressed air source of at least 6 bar.
- Remove valve springs with assembly lever VW541/1A and thrust piece VW541/5.
Note:
^ Tight keepers can be loosened by tapping lightly on the assembly lever with a hammer.
- Pull off valve stem seals with 3047A.
Installing
- Place plastic sleeve - A - supplied on appropriate valve stem. This will prevent the new valve stem seal - B - being damaged.
- Place new valve stem seal in seal driver 3129.
- Oil valve stem seal sealing lip and press carefully onto valve guide.
The rest of the assembly is basically a reverse of the disassembly sequence.
