Front Crankshaft Seal: Service and Repair
Crankshaft oil seal - belt pulley end, replacing
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
^ Seal remover 3203
^ Counter support 3415
^ Assembly tool T10053
^ Torque wrench V.A.G1331

Removing
- Remove toothed belt.
- Remove crankshaft toothed belt pulley by counter-holding pulley with counter support 3415.
- To guide seal remover, screw center bolt into crankshaft onto limit stop by hand.
- Unscrew inner part of seal remover 3203 nine turns (approx. 20 mm) out of outer part and lock with knurled screw.
- Lubricate threaded head of seal remover 3203, place it in position and exerting firm pressure, screw it as far as possible into oil seal.
- Loosen knurled screw and turn inner part against crankshaft until oil seal is pulled out.
Installing
- Observe notes.
Seal with coil spring
- Fit guide sleeve T10053/1 onto crankshaft journal.
- Lightly oil sealing lip of oil seal and slide seal over guide sleeve T10053/1.
PTFE seal
- Remove oil residue from crankshaft journal using clean cloth.
- Fit oil-free guide sleeve T10053/1 onto crankshaft journal.
- Slide dry seal over guide sleeve T10053/1.
Continued for both seal types
- Press oil seal in onto limit stop with assembly tool T10053 and bolt T10053/2 (M16 x 1.5 x 60).
- Install crankshaft toothed belt pulley. To install, counterhold toothed belt pulley with counter support 3415.
- Tighten new central bolt.
- Tightening torque: 90 Nm plus 1/4 turn (90°)
Note:
^ Thread and shoulder of the central bolt must be free of oil and grease.
- Install toothed belt and tension.
