Camshaft Oil Seal: Service and Repair

Camshaft oil seal, replacing

Notes on the seals

Camshaft oil seal, removing and installing

Notes on oil seals
^ Instead of the conventional sealing ring with a coil spring, a PTFE seal (Teflon) has been introduced gradually.

^ Differentiation characteristic: The conventional sealing ring with coil spring only has one sealing lip - arrow 1 -, which is pressed by a coil spring. The PTFE seal has a sealing surface like a thread - arrow 2 -, but no coil spring.
^ PTFE seals are allocated to the turning direction of the shaft (see arrow on seal). The wrong turning direction leads to oil leakage.
^ PTFE seals must be installed free of oil and grease! The shaft must also be free of oil and grease!
^ The sealing surface of the PTFE seal may not be stretched during installation, which is why it may not be used with the guide sleeve for seals with coil springs.
^ If a PTFE seal was installed, only replace it with a PTFE seal!

Camshaft oil seal, removing and installing

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
^ Oil seal extractor 2085
^ Counter support 3415
^ Assembly tool T10071
^ Torque wrench V.A.G1331
^ Torque wrench V.A.G1332

Removing
- Remove toothed belt guard - upper part.

- Set camshaft pulley to TDC No. 1 cylinder by turning crankshaft. Mark on camshaft pulley must align with arrow on toothed belt guard - arrows -.
- Loosen tensioning roller and remove toothed belt from camshaft pulley.
- Turn crankshaft back slightly.

- Remove camshaft pulley. When loosening bolt, hold camshaft pulley with counter support 3415 (remove bolts - arrows - beforehand).
- Remove woodruff key from camshaft.
- Screw camshaft pulley bolt into camshaft onto limit stop.
- Unscrew inner part of oil seal extractor 2085 two turns (approx. 3 mm) out of outer part and lock with knurled screw.

- Lubricate threaded head of oil seal extractor, place it in position and exerting firm pressure screw it into oil seal as far as possible.
- Loosen knurled screw and turn inner part against camshaft until oil seal is pulled out.
- Clamp flats of oil seal extractor in vice. Remove oil seal with pliers.

Installing

Condition
^ Pistons must not be positioned at TDC.

Work sequence
- Observe notes.

Seal with coil spring
- Lightly oil sealing lips of sealing ring.

- Position seal with assembly sleeve T10071 and press in onto limit stop with press sleeve T10071/1 and bolt T10071/2.

PTFE seal
- Remove oil residue from camshaft journal with a clean cloth.
- Position dry seal with oil-free assembly sleeve T10071 and press in until limit stop with press sleeve T10071/1 and bolt T10071/2.

Continuation for both seal types
- Install woodruff key in camshaft.

- Install camshaft pulley. When tightening camshaft pulley bolt counterhold with 3415.
- Tightening torque: 100 Nm

Note:
^ When turning the camshaft the crankshaft must not be at TDC. Danger of damage to valves/piston crown.

The rest of the assembly is basically a reverse of the disassembly sequence.
- Install toothed belt and tension.
