Identification of crankshaft bearing shells for cylinder block (gradual introduction)

During production a bearing shell of the correct thickness is allocated to the cylinder block. A color code is used to identify the thickness of the bearing shells.

Note:
^ The - arrow - points forward.

Which thickness of bearing shell should be installed at which point is marked with a letter on the underside of the sealing surface of the cylinder block - x -.

Color code

Note:
^ If the colour code is not stamped or is not legible then use the middle sized (red) bearing shell.
^ The lower crankshaft bearing shells are always supplied, as a spare part, with the color code "yellow".

Engine codes BDC, BGD
^ When working on the engine, it should be secured with the Holding fixture VW540 and the Spacers VW 540/1 B to the support clamp.
^ The balancer shaft gear assembly must be adjusted.
