Cooling System, Draining and Filling
Cooling system, draining and filling
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
^ Refractometer T10007
^ Adapter for cooling system V.A.G 1274/8
^ Drip tray V.A.G 1306
^ Torque wrench V.A.G 1331
^ Spring-type clip pliers VAS5024
^ Cooling system charging unit VAS 6096 (no figure)
Draining
CAUTION!
Steam can be released when removing the cap from the expansion tank. Cover the cap with a cloth and open carefully.
- Open cap on coolant expansion tank.
- Remove center sound insulation.
- Open drain plug - arrow - and drain coolant from radiator.
- Disconnect coolant hose at oil cooler - arrow - and drain coolant from engine.
Note:
^ Observe disposal regulations!
Filling
Note:
^ Only use coolant additive G 12. Identifying characteristics: Colored lilac (purple)
^ G 12 and coolant additives marked "In accordance with TL VW 774 F" prevent frost and corrosion damage, scaling and also raise boiling point of coolant. For this reason the system must be filled all year round with frost and corrosion protection additives.
^ G 12 lilac can be mixed with coolant additive G 12 red.
^ Because of its high boiling point, the coolant improves engine reliability under heavy loads, particularly in countries with tropical climates.
^ Frost protection (anti-freeze) must be guaranteed to approx. -25° C (approx. -35° C in countries with an arctic climate) in the washer system.
^ The coolant concentration must not be reduced by adding water even in warmer seasons and in warmer countries. The anti-freeze must be at least 40% of mixture.
^ Use only clean drinking water for mixing.
^ If for climatic reasons a higher frost protection is required, the amount of G 12 can be increased, but only up to 60% (frost protection to about -40° C), as otherwise frost protection is reduced again and cooling effectiveness is also reduced.
^ The refractometer T10007 is recommended for determining the current freezing temperature of the coolant.
^ If radiator, heat exchanger, cylinder head or cylinder head gasket is replaced, do not reuse old coolant.
Recommended mixture proportions:
^ The quantity of coolant can vary depending upon vehicle equipment.
- Screw drain plug into radiator - arrow -.
- Push coolant hose onto oil cooler connection - arrow - and secure with a spring-type clamp.
With cooling system charging unit VAS 6096
- Screw adapter V.A.G 1274/8 onto expansion tank.
- Fill coolant circuit using cooling system charging unit VAS 6096: Operating instructions for cooling system charging unit VAS 6096
Without cooling system charging unit VAS 6096
Vehicles with max. marking on expansion tank
- Fill with coolant up to max. mark on expansion tank.
Vehicles without max. marking on expansion tank
Fill with coolant slowly up to upper marking of hatched field on expansion tank - arrow -.
Continuation for all vehicles with and without cooling system charging unit VAS 6096:
- Fit expansion tank cap.
- Switch off heater and air conditioning system.
- Start engine and maintain an engine speed of about 2000 rpm for approx. 3 minutes.
- Run engine until coolant fan cuts-in.
- Switch off ignition.
CAUTION!
Steam can be released when removing the cap from the expansion tank, cover cap with a cloth and open carefully.
- Check coolant level and top-up if necessary.
When the engine is at operating temperature the coolant level must be:
^ In vehicles with max. mark on the expansion tank: on the max. mark
^ in vehicles without max. mark on the expansion tank: on the upper mark of the shaded area.
When the engine is cold the coolant level must be:
^ In vehicles with max. mark on the expansion tank: between the max. and min. mark
^ in vehicles without max. mark on the expansion tank: in the center of the shaded area.
