Brake caliper, removing and installing
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
^ Torque wrench V.A.G 1331
^ Brake pedal depressor V.A.G 1869/2
Removing
The work sequence is only valid for the replacement of the brake caliper or for the following repairs of the brake caliper.
- Remove wheels.
- Disconnect connector - 1 - on models with a brake pad wear indicator.
- Install suction bottle bleeder hose on the brake caliper bleeder valve and then open bleeder valve.
- Use brake pedal depressor V.A.G 1869/2.
- Close bleeder valve and remove suction bottle.
- Remove brake hose.
- Remove both caps from brake caliper bearing bushings.
- Remove both guide pins - arrows - from brake caliper.
- Remove brake caliper from brake carrier.
- Remove brake pads from brake caliper.
Installing
^ The piston is pushed back.
- Place inner brake pad (piston side) - 1 - and outer brake pad - 2 - in brake caliper with retaining springs.
^ Inner brake pad (piston side) with large 3 finger clip - 1 -.
^ Outer brake pad with small 3 finger clip - 2 - (black).
- Locate lower part of brake caliper housing - arrow - first.
- Install brake caliper with brake pads on wheel bearing housing.
The brake caliper lug - arrow - must be behind wheel bearing housing guide.
- Secure brake caliper housing to brake carrier with both guide pins and tighten to 28 Nm.
- Install both protective caps.
- Screw brake hose onto brake caliper and tighten to 35 Nm
- Remove brake depressor V.A.G 1869/2.
- Insert brake pad wear indicator connector into retainer on suspension strut.
- Bleed brake system.
- Install wheels.
Note:
^ Depress brake pedal firmly several times with vehicle stationary so that the brake pads are properly seated in their normal operating position.
^ Check brake fluid level.
