^ Self-study program, VW No. 851103, 5 speed automatic transmission 09A/09B.
ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid)
Oil for automatic transmission
ATF level
The "level" of ATF in the transmission when full.
Brakes
They brake and hold certain rotating parts in the transmission. The 5 Spd. automatic transmission 09A has one brake band and two multi-plate brakes. They differ from the clutches in that the brakes are supported on the transmission housing.
Torque converter
Transfers the engine torque to the automatic transmission and acts as a drive-away clutch. The torque converter also includes the lock-up clutch.
On Board Diagnostic (OBD)
The capability of the control module:
to recognize malfunctions,
to react to malfunctions,
to store trouble codes for malfunctions,
to register malfunctions and make them available in the measured value block.
Performing On Board Diagnostic (OBD)
Connecting the Scan Tool to be able to interrogate the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory.
Clutches
Together with the brakes, they engage the individual gears.
Wiring
Routing of electrical wiring and components in vehicle.
Shift lock solenoid -N110-
Located in the selector mechanism close to the selector lever. Prevents movement (involuntary) of the selector lever from positions P and N as long as the brake pedal is not depressed.
Solenoid valves
Open and close the oil channels to the clutches and brakes.
Multi-function Transmission Range (TR) switch -F125-
Electrical switch that performs various tasks. Further information can be found in the self-study program.
Parking lock
The parking lock gear is mechanically locked when the vehicle is stationary and prevents the vehicle from rolling (involuntarily).
Planetary gearbox
Is a mechanical component of the automatic transmission and is switched via the clutches and brakes without loss of power.
Valve body
Located on the bottom of the transmission and is enclosed in the ATF pan. Its valves regulate the pressure and distribute it via the oil channels to the switch elements (clutches and brakes).
Transmission Control Module -J217-
This electronic control module defines the shift points. The function of the transmission is monitored via the On Board Diagnostic (OBD). If a component or sensor fails, an emergency running program ensures the vehicle can still be driven.
TCC (Torque converter lock-up clutch)
Transfers the engine torque mechanically to the transmission.
