Redetermining shim S4
Special tools equipment
^ VW 385/17 End measuring plate
^ 3116 Clamping sleeve
^ 3116/1 Hex head bolt
^ VAG 1576 Torque wrench
This adjustment is required when the following components are replaced:
^ Gear carrier
^ - Hollow shaft
This adjustment re-establishes the pretensioning of the tapered roller bearings for the pinion shaft and hollow shaft.
1. Shim S4
2. Gear carrier
3. Transmission housing
4. Hollow shaft
5. Pinion shaft/hollow shaft tapered roller bearing
6. Pinion shaft
a - Housing depth of gear carrier
b - Dimension of pinion gear face to contact shoulder of tapered roller bearing on hollow shaft
- Tapered roller bearing (pinion shaft/hollow shaft) pre-loaded, 10 Nm
S4 Thickness of shim S4
Note: If pinion shaft is replaced, follow Adjustment Overview.
Redetermining shim after replacing gear carrier
Note: Use depth gauge with precision of at least 5/100 mm.
- Determine difference in depths -a- of old and new gear carriers.
Example:
If new gear carrier is deeper:
- Install thicker shim S4
If new gear carrier is shallower:
- Install thinner shim S4

Redetermining shim after replacing hollow shaft
Note: Use a vernier caliper with precision of at least /100 mm
- Tighten clamping sleeve to exactly 10 Nm.
A - Jaw protectors
- Place end measuring plate VW 385/32 on pinion shaft face and measure distance -d-.
Upper (right) measuring point is contact collar of tapered roller bearing inner race.
Example: 248.50 mm
- Install new hollow shaft and re-measure distance -d-.
Example: 248.70 mm

Determining difference:
If dimension -d- of new hollow shaft is larger:
- Install a correspondingly thinner shim S4.
If dimension -d- of new hollow shaft is smaller:
- Install a correspondingly thicker shim S4.
Note: Determine shims according to parts Supplier.

Various tolerances make it possible to obtain exactly the required shim thickness.
