Adjustment Shim "S4", Determining A New When Replacing Output Flange

Adjustment shim "S4", determining a new when replacing output flange, 012/01W, 5 SPD. M/T
^ Clean housing mating surfaces.
^ Insert drive pinion into transmission cover.
^ Turn drive pinion 8 rotations by hand so that tapered roller bearing settles.





^ Install measuring tools.
^ Set gauge (3 mm measuring range) to zero with 1 mm pre-load.
^ Remove Dial Gauge Holder VW 387 together with dial gauge.
^ Remove drive pinion, tapered roller bearing outer race with thrust plate, adjustment shim and washer and install in new transmission cover.
^ Install measuring tools on new transmission cover.
^ Read value on dial gauge.

Example:





^ If the readout value on dial gauge is larger than 1.00 mm, adjustment shim S4 must be reduced in thickness to value "x".
^ Install transmission cover and check tapered roller bearing pre-load for drive pinion.
