Seal on Intermediate Flange For Front Final Drive
Seal on intermediate flange for front final drive, replacing
- Observe general repair instructions.
Special tools and equipment
- VAG 1383A Engine/transmission jack with
VAG1359/2 Universal transmission support
- VAG 1331 Torque wrench
Removing
- Remove center differential.
- Remove bolts -arrows- on intermediate flange for front final drive.
- Dowel pins -A- and magnet-B- remain on intermediate flange.
Slowly and carefully take intermediate flange for front final drive off transmission housing. Otherwise gear wheels (pinion) can drop out of transmission.
Gear wheels, which have been dropped on the floor, must not be used again. If this happens, the transmission must be replaced.
- Lift off intermediate flange for axle drive.
- Do not take out the output pinion -1-, intermediate pinion -2- and input pinion -3 for front final drive and secure against falling out.
If the front final drive gear wheels (pinions) are removed, the gear wheel markings -arrows- for output pinion -1- and intermediate pinion -2- must face outward (away from transmission) when reinstalling.
Installing
Install in reverse order but note following:
- Ensure dowel sleeves -A- are seated correctly before installing.
- Install gasket -B-.
- Place on intermediate flange for final drive.
Installing the intermediate flange onto the output shaft without using great care can damage the seal -arrow- sealing lips.
- Tighten bolts -arrows- on intermediate flange for front final drive hand tight.
- Ensure dowel pins -A- and magnet -B- are seated correctly.
- Install center differential.
- Tighten bolts -A and C- for center differential -2- hand tight.
- Tighten bolts -B- for front final drive to intermediate flange -1- and bolts -A- for center differential -2- to tightening torque incrementally using diagonal sequence.
- Tighten bolts -C- for center differential to intermediate flange to tightening torque.
- Fill center differential with gear oil and check.
- Fill with ATF and check ATF level.
