Selector Lever Position Signal, Checking

Only for vehicles with automatic transmission

The Engine Control Module (ECM) receives the following information from the transmission control module:
Driving position selected (selector lever in 2/3/4/R/D) or
no driving position selected (selector lever in P or N)

Special tools and equipment
- VAG 1551 Scan Tool (or VAG 1552 mobile scan tool) with VAG 1551/3 cable
- VAG 1598/31 test box
- VAG 1526 multimeter or VAG 1715 multimeter
- VAG 1594 connector test kit
- Wiring diagram

Test condition
- Selector lever of automatic transmission must be in "P" or "N".

Test sequence
- Connect VAG 1551 scan tool (VAG 1552). Then switch ignition on and select the Engine Control Module (ECM) using address word 01 (connecting scan tool and selecting ECM).

- Press buttons -0- and -8- to select "Read measuring value block" function 08. Press -Q- button to confirm input.

- Press 0, 5 and 6 for the function "display group number 56", and then press Q to exit from input mode.

- Observe display field 4. The reading should be
Specification: x x x 0 x "Neutral" on the display.

- Press foot brake pedal and select driving position. The reading should be
Specification: x x x 1 x "DrivePos. ON" on the display.

- Press -> button.
- Press buttons -0- and -6- to select "End Output" function 06. Press -Q- button to confirm input.
- Switch ignition off.

If reading does not change:
- Test databus. CAN-Bus, Checking
