Steering Column Lock: Service and Repair
Steering lock housing, removing and installing
Removing
Airbag unit and steering wheel removed, Refer to Restraint System, Air Bag, Service and Repair
Upper and lower steering column trim removed, Refer to Steering Column, Service and Repair
- Remove bolt -arrow- for steering column switch and remove steering column switch.
- Remove plastic cover over shear bolts.
On vehicles with automatic transmission, unhook ignition lock cable
- Chisel off shear head bolts with a suitable chisel.
Removing and installing ignition switch/lock cylinder
- Refer to Starting and Charging, Ignition Switch,Service and Repair
Installing
- On vehicles with automatic transmission, attach ignition lock cable.
- Install new shear bolts.
- Tighten shear head bolts until heads shear off.
- Install steering column switch.
- Adjust distance between steering column switch and steering wheel, Refer to Steering Column, Service and Repair.
Installation is the reverse order of removal.
