Cylinder head, removing and installing cylinder head

Checking compression; Refer to Compression Check, Testing and Inspection

Note:
^ When installing an exchange cylinder head with fitted camshaft, lubricate the running contact surfaces the bucket tappets and the camshaft cam surfaces before installing the cylinder head cover.
^ The plastic packing pieces for protecting the open valves must not be removed until immediately before installing the cylinder head.
^ If the cylinder head is replaced, all the coolant in the system must also be replaced.
^ Removing and installing intake manifold; Refer to Intake Manifold, Service and Repair.

Engines with steel cylinder head cover:
^ Engine code AEG

Engines with aluminum cylinder head cover.
^ Engine codes AVH, AZG, BDC, BEV, BGD

1. Cover
2. Seal
3. Breather housing
^ Turn to right to remove
4. 10 Nm
5. Seal
^ Replace if damaged
6. Retainer
7. Sealing plug, 15 Nm
^ Replace
8. Seal
^ Replace
9. Union
10. Lifting eye
11. 20 Nm
12. Cylinder head gasket
^ Replace
^ After replacement replace entire coolant amount
13. 15 Nm
14. Rear toothed belt guard
15. Cylinder head
^ Check for distortion; Refer to Fig 1.
^ Reworking sealing surface; Refer to Fig. 1
^ After replacement replace entire coolant amount
16. Cylinder head bolt
^ Replace
17. Oil deflector
18. Cylinder head cover gasket
^ Replace if damaged
^ Coat cylinder head/bearing cap transition points with D 454 300 A2 before installing
19. Cylinder head cover
20. Reinforcing strip
21. Rear toothed belt guard, upper part

^ Only engine codes BDC, BGD to Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) heating element -N79
5. Shaped hose
^ Engine codes AVH, AZG through Model Year 2001
6. Shaped hose
^ Engine codes AVH, AZG from Model Year 2002
^ Engine codes BDC, BEV and BGD
^ Do not remove union between intake manifold hose and shaped hose.
7. To intake manifold upper part
^ Only Model Year from 2002
8. Seal
^ Replace
9. Sealing plug, 15 Nm
^ Replace
10. Cylinder head bolt
^ Replace
11. Connecting unions
12. 10 Nm
13. Seal
^ Replace
14. 20 Nm
15. Lifting eye
16. Cylinder head gasket
^ Replace
^ After replacement replace entire coolant amount
17. 15 Nm
18. 20 Nm
19. Rear toothed belt guard
20. Toothed belt

^ Check for distortion

Max permissible distortion: 0.1 mm
