Flanged Shaft Oil Seals, Replacing (Transmission Installed)

Observe general repair instructions.

Special tools






- VW 771 Slide hammer
- 771/37 Puller hooks






- 3106 Drift


Removing

Before replacing left side oil seal:
- Remove axle shaft.

Before replacing right side oil seal:
- Turn steering to right onto full lock stop.
- Remove right inner constant velocity joint protective cover from engine if installed.
- Disconnect axle7 shaft from flange shaft.
- Tie up axle shaft as high as possible using care not to damage axle shaft painted surface.
- Place drip tray under transmission.






- Remove flange shaft cone-head bolt.
- Remove flanged shaft with spring.






- Pull out seal.

CAUTION! Do not damage sleeve or leakage can occur.

Note: Replace sleeve if damaged.

Installing






- Drive seal straight into sleeve onto stop.
- Fill space between seal lips with multi-purpose grease.
- Install axle shaft.
- Install cone-head bolt into flange shaft threaded piece.
- Install axle shaft to flange shaft.
- If removed, install protective cover for right side inner constant velocity joint to engine.
- Top up transmission gear oil.

Tightening torque

Flange shaft to transmission (cone head bolt): 25 Nm

Drive shaft to flange shaft M8: 40 Nm

Drive shaft to flange shaft M10: 80 Nm

Drive shaft protective cap to engine: 33 Nm
