Inner Constant Velocity (CV) joint, checking

The joint can be disassembled to replace dirty grease or for checking the balls and ball tracks for wear and damage.

Removing





- Swivel ball hub and ball cage.
- Press out ball cage in direction of arrow.
- Press balls out of cage.

CAUTION:

The ball hub and joint are paired and must not be interchanged.





- Tilt ball hub out of ball cage over ball track -arrows-.
- Check joint housing, ball hub, ball cage and balls for indentations (pitting) and signs of seizure.

Note:

Excessive backlash in the joint will be noticed as a knock when changing from acceleration to deceleration or vice versa. Replace the joint if necessary. Polished areas and ball track marks are not reasons for replacing the joint.

Installing





- Install ball hub over both chamfers into ball cage. The hub can be installed in any position. Press balls into cage.
- Install hub together with cage and balls at right angle to joint.

Notes:





^ When installing make sure that the wide spacing -a- on the joint housing is aligned with the narrow spacing -b- on the hub after swiveling in.
^ The chamfer on the inner diameter of ball hub (splines) must face the larger diameter of joint housing.





- Swivel in ball hub, hub must be swiveled out of cage -arrows- far enough to allow balls to install into ball tracks.





- Press cage firmly (arrow) until hub swings fully into position.

Checking operation of constant velocity (CV) joint

The CV joint is correctly assembled when the ball hub can be moved by hand backward and forward over its entire axial movement range.
