Selector lever cable, removing and installing
Removing
- Check whether a coded radio is installed. If so, obtain anti-theft coding.
- Move selector lever to Tiptronic gate.
- With ignition switched off disconnect battery Ground strap.
- Pull intake hose -1- and connector -2- off Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor.
- Pull secondary air pump hose -3- off air cleaner housing.
- Remove bolts -4-, -5- and -6-.
- Remove air cleaner complete.
- Press selector lever cable -1- off selector shaft lever -3- with, for example, a 10 mm open end wrench -2-.
- Press locking devices on selector lever cable support mounting together (arrows) and pull selector lever cable out of transmission support mounting.
- Unclip selector lever cable -1- out of clip (arrow) on transmission.
- Raise vehicle.
- Loosen double clamp -A- and slide to rear.
- Remove tunnel bridge -B- located beneath exhaust system.
- Remove heat shields -C- and -D-.
- Remove 4 nuts (arrows -A-).
- Remove 2 bolts (arrows -B-).
- Carefully slide cover forward over selector lever cable.
Note: Do not damage protective covering when doing this.
Note: The selector lever -3- must be positioned in the Tiptronic gate (arrow -A-) before starting the next work sequence.
- Pry selector lever cable -2- off selector lever -3- using a screwdriver (arrow -B-).
- Pull locking plate -1- for selector lever housing selector lever cable out downward.
- Carefully pull selector lever cable out of selector lever housing.
Installing
Install in reverse order. When doing this note the following:
Note:
^ Check protective sleeve for damage. The protective sleeve can only be changed together with the selector lever cable.
^ Check that the protective sleeve is correctly installed. Do not install protective sleeve twisted.
^ Do not grease eye and ball socket.
^ Do not bend or kink the selector lever cable.
Selector lever -3- positioned in Tiptronic gate (arrow -A-).
- Guide selector lever cable -2- into selector lever housing and press onto selector lever -3- with a screwdriver -4-.
- Install new locking plate -1- in selector lever housing for selector lever cable.
Installation position:
Angled end of locking plate faces end of selector lever cable.
- Lower vehicle.
- Pull rod upward and move selector lever from position "P" to "S" with rod held in upward position.
Selector mechanism and selector lever cable must move freely when doing this. If not, replace selector lever cable or service selector mechanism.
- Pull rod upward and move selector lever to position "P" with rod held in upward position.
- Screw cover with bonded seal hand-tight onto selector lever housing.
Note: Ensure seal is positioned correctly.
- Tighten nuts (arrows -A-).
- Tighten 2 bolts (arrows -B-).
- Insert protective covering of selector lever cable into cover.
- Move selector shaft lever -3- to position "P" on transmission.
Locking lever must engage in park lock wheel, both front wheels blocked (cannot be turned together in one direction)
- Loosen bolt -2- on front ball socket of selector lever cable -1-.
- Insert selector lever cable into transmission support bracket and press carefully onto selector shaft lever. Do not bend selector shaft lever when doing this, otherwise selector mechanism cannot be adjusted exactly.
Locking devices of selector lever cable must engage into support mounting.
- Tighten bolt-2-.
- Clip selector lever cable -1- into clip (arrow) on transmission. Ensure a distance of at least 5 mm from ATF cooler is maintained when routing gear selector cable.
- Reconnect exhaust system and install tunnel bridge.
- Connect battery Ground strap.
- Check selector mechanism.
- Install air filter housing.
- Enter radio code.
- Initialize power windows, set correct time on clock.
