Flanged Shaft Oil Seal - Right Side, Replacing

Flanged shaft oil seal - right side, replacing
Special tools and equipment

^ VAG 1306 Drip tray

^ T10055 Puller
^ T10055/2 Adapter
^ T10177 Press piece Hand drill (commercially available)

Removing

- Remove sound insulation (arrows).
- Remove right side sound insulation.
- Turn steering fully onto right lock.

- Mark installation position of ball joint bolts (arrows) on control arm.
- Remove bolts (arrows).
- Disconnect coupling rod -A- from control arm.

Note:
^ This work sequence is necessary so that there is no requirement to disconnect the axle shaft from the wheel bearing (wheel hub).
^ The right side axle shaft needs only to be disconnected from the transmission.

- Remove right side inner constant velocity joint protective cover -A- from engine (arrows), if installed.
- Disconnect right side axle shaft -B- from transmission (direction of arrow).

Note:
^ There is no separate flange shaft in the transmission; the axle shaft is inserted directly into the transmission.
^ Only the special tool may be used to pry the axle shaft out of the transmission. When using other tools to remove the axle shaft, such as a screwdriver or an assembly lever, the transmission or the axle shaft will be damaged and must therefore be replaced.

- Raise right axle shaft and secure (tie up).
- Position drip tray VAG 1306 underneath transmission.

- Seal opening in transmission for axle shaft with a clean cloth -A-.
- Carefully drill a 2 to 4 mm hole in outer metal ring of oil seal using a commercially available twist drill -B-.

Note:
^ Grease the twist drill -B-, so that drillings will stick to the grease.
^ Drill only through the metal ring -C-, otherwise the transmission will be damaged.
^ The illustration shows the left side oil seal, the procedure for the right side oil seal is identical.

- Screw an approximately 4 mm diameter panel screw into drilled hole of oil seal (arrow).

Note:
^ The panel screw must not be screwed in too deeply, otherwise the bearing behind will be damaged.
^ The illustration shows the left side oil seal, the procedure for the right side oil seal is identical.

- Pull oil seal out using puller T10055 and adapter T10055/2.
- Remove cloth and thoroughly clean transmission and opening for axle shaft.
- No metal filings may enter the transmission or the opening for the axle shaft. Clean the area of metal drillings using a vacuum cleaner if necessary.
- If only the metal ring could be removed when attempting to pull the seal out:

- Pry rest of seal out using a screwdriver -A-.
B - Assembly lever

Installing
Install in reverse order. When doing this note the following:
- Moisten outer edges and sealing lip of oil seal with ATF.
- Installation position:
- Open side of oil seal faces transmission.

- Guide inner sealing lip -A- of oil seal carefully over transmission stub shaft -B-. Sealing lip must not roll back.
- Press oil seal in as far as possible by hand (arrows).

- Drive oil seal in onto limit stop of press piece T10177. Do not tilt seal when doing this.
- Replace circlip on transmission side of right side axle shaft.
- Push axle shaft into stub shaft in transmission.

- Bolt ball joint to control arm (onto old marks) using new bolts (arrows) and bolt coupling rod -A- to control arm.
- Check ATF level and top off if necessary.
- Install sound insulation.
