Drive Flange Seal
Required special tools and equipment.
^ VW 681 Oil seal extractor
^ 3301 Spindle with nut from assembly too]
^ 3319 Thrust piece
^ VA.G 1306 Drip tray
^ VA.G 1331 Torque wrench or similar
^ VA.G 1332 Torque wrench or similar
^ Kukko 18/0 Puller
^ 2 Bolts M8 x 35 mm
^ Washers 8 mm
When replacing right oil seal:
^ Remove noise insulation panel -arrows-.
^ Remove right inner constant velocity joint protective cover from engine if installed.
^ Remove bolts of drive shaft from drive flange.
^ Place drive shaft to one side and secure.
^ If necessary remove right drive shaft
When replacing left oil seal:
^ Loosen wheel bolts with vehicle standing on its wheels.
^ Lift vehicle.
^ Remove wheel.
^ Remove left noise insulation panel -arrows-.
^ Remove bolts of drive shaft from drive flange.
^ Remove pendulum support from sub-frame -arrows-.
^ Mark installation position of ball joint bolts on left control arm and remove bolts.
^ Remove bolts -arrows-.
^ Detach left coupling rod -1- from control arm and turn coupling rod upward.
^ Swing wheel bearing housing outward.
^ Guide drive shaft out between sub-frame and transmission while pushing engine and transmission assembly forward (you need a second technician).
^ Lift drive shaft and secure to suspension strut with wire.
Continued for both oil seals:
^ Pierce sealing cap in drive flange with screwdriver and pry out.
^ Remove spindle from bridge -A- of puller Kukko 18-0.
^ Instead install spindle with nut of assembly tool 3301.
^ Bolt puller Kukko 18-0 to flange using two 8x35 mm bolts and 8 mm washers.
^ Remove circlip -arrow- for axle flange.
^ Remove spindle with nut from assembly tool 3301.
^ Pre-install spindle -B- of puller Kukko 18-0 again in bridge -A-.
^ Place drip tray underneath.
^ Remove axle flange.
^ Pull out drive flange oil seal with VW 681.
^ Install new oil seal to stop with press piece 3319, M10 threaded rod approx. 80 mm (3 inch) long and nut with washer.
^ Fill space between sealing lip and dust lip with multi-purpose grease.
^ Install drive flange, dished washer and circlip.
^ Remove spindle of puller Kukko 18-0 from bridge -A-
^ Instead install spindle and nut of assembly tool 3301.
^ Insert drive flange, dished washer and circlip.
^ Bolt puller Kukko 18-0 using two 8x35 mm bolts and 8 mm washers to flange.
^ Pull in drive flange.
Note:
Drive flange can also be pulled in with VIN 391.
^ Install circlip and seal drive flange with cover.
^ Reconnect ball joint to control arm.
^ Tighten bolts -arrows- to tightening torque.
^ Attach coupling rod to control arm.
^ Install drive shaft.
^ Install road wheel.
^ With transmission installed, check final drive oil level.
^ Install noise insulation panel.
Tightening torques
Drive shaft to drive flange 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.)
Ball joint to control arm 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.) + 90°
Coupling rod to control arm 46 Nm (33 ft. lbs.)
Pendulum support to sub-frame 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.) + 90°
Wheel bolts to wheel hub 120 Nm (89 ft. lbs.)
Protective cap/drive shaft to engine 33 Nm (24 ft. lbs.)
